Liverpool v Bayern Munich | Things We Learned

Liverpool head into the second leg with everything still to play for after drawing 0-0 to Bayern Munich at home this evening.

We Played Fine

I don’t think you can really pick out any individual who played poorly tonight, not every player was on their A game but still a solid performance from the team from a very defensive Bayern side. We fielded our strongest possible eleven tonight and considering we where playing Matip and Fabinho as our center-back partnership up against top scorer Robert Lewandowski, we did fine.

I was hoping for a bit more heavy metal football and was wanting us to grab a few goals but Bayern came for the draw so there was no way they were going to let us through their defence. Hummels and Sule are a solid CB pairing and have been for Bayern all season so they were not going to take any messing, Alaba has been one of the best left-backs for years now so he could handle Salah and Kimmich is Germany’s number one right-back and you don’t just get there by chance.

Hendo Put In A Shift

A lot of people won’t like this comment but Henderson was our best player tonight in my opinion, he was everywhere and you have got to give him credit for it. He was breaking up the Bayern attacks, taking the ball off of players and then looking up and pinging it to Mo Salah or Sadio Mane and that is what you want to see from him more often. He get’s a lot more stick than he deserves and sometimes you have got to hold your hands up and give credit where credit is due.

If he puts in a performance like that on Sunday I will be very happy.

Front Three A Bit Off The Pace

I think we need to switch things up a bit.

Mo, Bobby, and Mane just haven’t been their usual selves as of late. Mane has stood out in a few games but doesn’t seem to find the net as much as you would like him to. We know that Firmino has had a virus and missed a few training sessions so I was a bit surprised to see him starting tonight, he did okay and was getting on the ball a bit but I would have liked him to have a few more shots when he had the ball on the edge of the area rather than looking for the pass. Salah was up against tough opposition in Alaba but he still manages to find himself in pockets of space where he could cause problems, he seems to be having fewer shots from the edge of the area when he cuts inside and that frustrates me a bit but other than that he did ok.

Big Game Sunday

This game is over with now and it is time for the players to shift their focus to Sunday and think about just how important it is for the remainder of the season. Man United have hit good form recently and we can’t go there expecting an easy win, it will be tough and the players need to be on top form if they want to show everyone what they are really about.

Let me know your thoughts on the game below!
