28th December 1998: Liverpool 4-2 NewcastleLiverpool fought back to beat Newcastle 4-2 at Anfield during the Christmas period of the 1998/99 season. It was a quiet first half where we witnessed just the one goal, a Noberto Solano thunderbolt just before the half hour mark. Liverpool failed to deal with and properly clear a free-kick from the left hand side and it fell to Solano who hammered home from 25 yards. The Magpie could count themselves lucky that they still had elven men on the pitch after a horror tackle from Dietmar Hamann on Steve McManaman which gave Gerard Houllier no option but to substitute Macca for a young Steven Gerrard early on in the game. Hamann received merely a yellow card for the tackle which could be described as a potential leg breaker. However, Hamman was eventually dismissed anyway just after Newcastle’s opener for a second bookable offence.Nine minutes after the break, despite being down to ten men, the away side strengthened their lead as Andreas Andersson increased the Magpies’ advantage to two goals. Andersson had only been on the pitch for six minutes but got himself on the scoresheet after rounding David James and slotting into the back of the net. The home side found themselves 2-0 down at home to a team with a man down, but never rule Liverpool down as far as comebacks are concerned. The Reds put pressure on the Magpies, peppering the Newcastle goal with chance after chance after the hour mark. Eventually, Michael Owen pulled a goal back for the Reds eleven minutes after Newcastle had gone 2-0 up. The 19 year-old managed to get the final touch on a wayward, long-range effort from Jamie Carragher.Liverpool were boosted by the goal and continued to mount pressure on a tired, deflated Newcastle who were no worried about holding onto their slender lead whilst a man down. Four minutes after Owen’s goal, Liverpool equalised. Karl-Heinz Riedle the scorer. The German produced a determined finish to get on the end of a dangerous cross from the right hand side by Vegard Heggem.2-2 with 20 minutes to go, and with Liverpool in the rampant mood since Newcastle made in 2-0 you really wouldn’t have bet against the Reds now. With ten minutes to go, Michael Owen put the Reds in the lead with his second goal of the game. The young Englishman once again benefitted from a slice of luck, a Jamie Redknapp strike deflected off Owen’s chest onto the post and the 19 year old was quickest to react and stick the ball into the back of the net.Riedle shook off a knock to confirm the win for LFC. In similar fashion to Newcastle’s second goal of the game, Riedle rounded the goalkeeper, Shay Given and hit the back of the net with a strike to ensure the Reds came from behind to beat the Magpies.28th December 2008: Newcastle 1-5 LiverpoolAnother Christmas fixture against Newcastle on the 28th December, and this one was another six goal thriller in 2008. The first goal came on the half hour mark courtesy of Stevie G. The ball finding its way off both posts and into the back of the net after the ball had been pulled back by Yossi Benayoun.Five minutes later, Gerrard went from scorer to provider as his corner was met by big Sami Hyppia who powered a header passed Shay Given. On the stroke of half-time, Newcastle pulled a goal back as they too scored from a corner. David Edgar beating Reina, heading into the roof of the net.Less than five minutes after the break Liverpool restored their two goal advantage as Ryan Babel made most of a pinball like situation from a corner by stabbing home from close range to put the Reds 3-1 ahead.Liverpool’s fourth was a thing of beauty. After some lovely football from the Reds, Steven Gerrard finished off the move by dinking the ball over Shay Given superbly to ensure that LFC went 4-1 up. With just over ten minutes to go, Liverpool were handed the opportunity to strengthen their lead even further when Newcastle’s goalscorer, Edgar was penalised for tripping David Ngog and a penalty was awarded. The reliable Xabi Alonso made no mistake from the spot, converting to make it 5-1.With the Reds playing two days before Manchester City play Leicester, it’s a chance for Liverpool to play their move and put pressure on City once again. Lets hope for lots of goals for LFC and a clean sheet would be nice too!26th December 2018: Liverpool 4-0 NewcastleThe Reds seem to play the Magpies around the Christmas period a lot, don’t we?! Liverpool hammered Newcastle on Boxing day in 2018 and the league leaders equalled Chelsea’s record from 2008-09 of the fewest goals conceded having only conceded seven goals after nineteen games of a top flight season. The win also put LFC seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.Dejan Lovren opened the scoring with a thunderous effort. The Liverpool centre-half producing a terrific, powerful finish after an attempted cleared header from Jamaal Lascelles fell straight at his feet. It wasn’t his best goal for the Reds, nothing will ever beat that one against Dortmund but it’s certainly up there.Shaqiri came close to getting Liverpool’s second from a free-kick but Dubravka saved well to prevent the Swiss, real life, action man from getting on the scoresheet. Mo Salah won Liverpool’s first penalty at Anfield for 424 days as he was brought to ground by Paul Dummett. The Egyptian then got up and converted the penalty himself just after half-time to make it 2-0 Liverpool. Liverpool’s third was extremely well worked and finished off cooly by Xherdan Shaqiri. An Andy Robertson cross found Sturridge on the edge of the area who with his back to goal found Jordan Henderson. The Skipper produced a delightful first time pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold and the young Scouser put it on a plate for Shaqiri to get Liverpool’s third with eleven minutes to go.Six minutes later, Fabinho got his first goal for the club. The Brazilian scoring with his head from a Mohamed Salah corner to ensure that the Reds win 4-0 against Rafa’s Newcastle on Boxing Day.So there you go, some incredible fixtures between the two sides. I’d be happy with goals on Saturday, as long as every single on of them is for the Reds. The Magpies deserve a hammering for how their board treated our Rafa.Whatever the score Saturday, we’re good at football and incredible at Anfield. Hopefully, probably, we’ll be singing ‘Libpool, top of the league,’ for another week. Up the Reds!Jack Gill
