European nights at Anfield are back and there was no better way to kick off then a 3-2 win over Paris Saint Germain!
James Milner is class
James Milner deserves every bit of praise he is receiving because he has been immense for us so far this season. Even last season you could see how crucial he was to our midfield and there’s no way you could drop him. Last night he was everywhere (nothing unusual there) if Trent or Robbo went up the park to try and create something he’d fill in those positions or he’d follow their run and try and create space for them or for a pass.
What I love most about him is how he take no nonsense. He wasn’t about Neymar or Mbappe trying their little tricks and flicks and there was several times where he just went right through both of them and thats where they struggled because they’re not used to that.
James Milner is 32 years old and still bossing games like that, the man deserves a lifetime deal at this club because I wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing until he’s 40!
Neymar? Mbappe? Cavani? Who?
Did Emerson Cavani even have a shot on goal last night? I don’t remember seeing one but I could be totally wrong. As for Neymar and Mbappe they’re still in Trent and Robbo pockets this morning.
Their front three struggled so much last night, we didn’t give them the space to move and wherever they went we had at least one player following them.
Yes Mbappe scored the equaliser and he took it really well but other than that he didn’t really do much else in the game.
One of the first things my dad said to me after the game yesterday was Do you think Neymar would survive in the Premier League and my honest answer was no. He’s played for Santos, Barcelona and PSG and all three of them leagues allow players like him the time and space to create a bit of magic but in the Premier you don’t get that opportunity, he’d struggle especially against the big teams and it would frustrate him just like it did last night.
No better place to play a European game than Anfield
After the heartbreak in May I feel like there is a different vibe from the team this season in this competition. They’re eager to win more and they want to re-create what they did last season but come away with the trophy this season and us as fans would love nothing more than that.
Eight of our starting line-up last night was in the starting eleven from Kiev and that group of players would have wanted to get off to a good start. Two goals in six minutes definitley helped them but there is no better feeling than your team scoring a late winner.
Every team must fear coming to Anfield on a European night and Neymar saying that we won’t even finish in the top four a couple weeks ago would have looked at us last night and thought oh wow.
The one eyed pirate saved us
Bobby Firmino. What a man.
Named on the bench last night due to the eye injury he picked up at the weekend so in came Daniel Sturridge and he took his chance, a lovely ball from Robertson into the box with Sturridge getting on the end of it to head us into the lead and thought he had an alright game. There where definitley moments when I thought we need someone up front who works a bit harder because that’s what you see week in week out with Bobby and we definitley missed that last night.
You could see the game shift as soon as he came on and him and Mane linked up straight away, he was dropping back trying to get the ball and when he did he would turn and try and start an attack and he took his goal brilliantly. In my head I was thinking cross it hard and low, someone will be able to get on the end of it but instead he just drops the shoulder, sends the defender the other way and went right across the face of goal into the bottom corner and his celebration couldn’t have been better either.
In my opposition review I looked at Tuchel record vs Liverpool and Klopp and last night just added to his defeat tally. I think if he has to come to Anfield in the future he should just stay at home because he hasn’t won there yet and he’s also only won one game out of 13 against Klopp now so I’m hoping we make it one game out of 14 in a couple of weeks time.
