Liverpool 0 -0 Stoke City
Not the most exciting game we have seen at Anfield over recent weeks but it was definitely one of the most important in my opinion. After throwing two points away last weekend the Reds needed to walk away with three points that put them one step closer to Champions League football next season.
Yes we have a more important game coming up mid-week that I have a lot more interest in so maybe the Players and Klopp where thinking more about the second leg in Rome rather than today’s game.
The reds were unlucky with Mo Salah chipover the keeper going wide, Danny Ings having a goal ruled out for offside and a few penalty shouts.
Gini Wijnaldum shines again In my opinion I think Wijnaldum was one of the stand out performers today. He has put in some great performances since he has been reinstated in the midfield and with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out for the season and not knowing when Can or Lallana will be back, he has really stepped up and shown Klopp that he can claim that midfield role as his own.
Crafty Midfield work from Jurgen With a shortage of midfielders Klopp decided to play a back five today with what I thought was going to mean that Alberto Moreno and Trent Alexander-Arnold were playing as our wing backs but majority of the game Trent was playing in midfield and very nearly got the goal to give Liverpool the lead.
Having enjoyed a breakout season with the Reds he has really claimed that right-back position of his own meaning Joe Gomez has had to fight his way back in after injury. Today just proves how versatile the youngster is and when asked by his manager to fulfil that role today, has done what he said and showed everyone just how good of a player he is and can become.
Butland did not shine on his Anfield audition
Over the last few weeks there has been speculation that Klopp wants to bring England goalkeeper Jack Butland to Anfield next season and the current Stoke City goalkeeper did not shine on his audition today.
Even if the rumours are not true, today still should have been a prime opportunity for Butland to show the Anfield faithful and manager that he would be the right fit to gifht Karius for the number one spot next season. From the get go the Englishman looked shaky, was passing the ball out of play and nearly gave Mo Salah the opportunity to score after dropping the ball on the edge of the box.
One thing is for sure, fans will not be wanting to see him in the yellow shirt next year.
