West Ham 1-4 Liverpool- 4th November 2017An inconsistent start to the 2017/2018 seasons for the reds was looking upwards after thrashing West Ham with what Jurgen Klopp called the ‘perfect’ counter attacking performance as a 4-1 win ended up being the final straw for West Ham manager Slaven Bilic. It was the first time Jurgen Klopp tried out the 4-4-2 with Firmino and Salah playing as a front two and Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin out in the wide areas. As Liverpool cleared a corner Salah and Mane were like two formula one cars in fifth gear and their pace left the West Ham defenders trailing as a unselfish Mane supplied Salah to slot past Joe Hart. Liverpool were clearly in the mood and doubled their lead three minutes later as a low corner was initially parried by Hart before Joel Matip tapped in his first of the season.West Ham responded through Manuel Lanzini who scored with a deft finish but the one goal margin only lasted sixty seconds as Oxlade-Chamberlin got his first Primer League goal for Liverpool as he followed up Hart’s save to give Liverpool control once again.Liverpool kept breaking with ease on a disorganised West Ham and Salah put the final nail in the coffin with a drilled finish into the bottom corner to add gloss to the score line. It may have not been the most eye-catching result, but it showed how ruthless Liverpool can be on their day as they would later show in their run to the Champions League final in Kiev. Liverpool 4-0 West Ham 5th March 2008 A Fernando Torres masterclass, how many times did we hear that during his debut 2007/2008 season where he scored 24 Primer League goals. Three of them came against West Ham under the floodlights which dragged them above Everton into 4th place in the table. The first was taken expertly in the early stages as he cut across a low ball from Dirk Kuyt to fire his effort into the bottom corner. The same two linked up for the second as Kuyt’s dinked cross was guided into the top corner at the Kop end.He nearly finished off his hattrick as a Gerrard cross was headed onto the crossbar this time, but the Spaniard did not have to wait long to claim the match ball. A lovely touch by Liverpool’s in form striker to get away from the West Ham defender gave him room to get an effort out of his feet that just about squeezed past Rob Green.Torres may have had the hattrick but Gerrard scored the goal of the day as he shifted the ball onto his right foot and unleashed a screamer into the top corner. West Ham 1-2 Liverpool 6th April 2014 As Liverpool were closing in on their first Primer League title under Brendan Rodgers in 2013/2014 a tough trip to Upton Park proved one of the trickiest hurdles for Liverpool to get past.Liverpool shaped up in 4-3-3 shape but lacked any rhythm as the prolific Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge couldn’t find any rhythm until just before half time when a long Steven Gerrard found Suarez who cleverly flicked the ball onto James Tomkins hand, giving Anthony Taylor no choice but to give Liverpool a penalty that was dispatched by Gerrard.More controversy followed as Simon Mignolet appealed for a foul by Andy Carrol which led to him thumbing the ball to Guy Demel to level the score line for the hammers. Lucas Leiva came on and made a difference as Liverpool switched to a 4-4-2 diamond as the reds looked to overload the centre. This meant there was more space for the fullbacks to get forward which led to Liverpool’s second penalty.Jon Flanagan was found by a clever Leiva through ball who was then brought down by current Liverpool favourite Adrian which brought wild protests by all the Liverpool players and Taylor pointed to the ball again even though replays showed Adrian got a hand on the ball. The second penalty was dispatched as emphatically as the first one.Despite a lot of long ball football towards the end of the game Liverpool hung on and the title remained in their hands after a game where the referee certainly was the talking point.
