In what is set to be an incredibly difficult transition period for Liverpool, the managerial spot is constantly under speculation.

With Xabi Alonso set to remain in Germany, Sporting Lisbon coach, Ruben Amorim, has launched into pole position to take over from Jürgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Transfermarkt Portugal’s Gonçalo Tristão Santos believes that although it would be a difficult task for the young Portuguese manager, becoming Klopp’s successor would be ‘hard to refuse’.

Dan spoke to Gonçalo about how Amorim would fit in at the Reds.

On Amorim’s player development, Gonçalo said: “He’s a coach who invests heavily in young players.

“He can help develop young talents. He’s developed Nuno Mendes who’s gone to Paris Saint-Germain, Tiago Tomás, Pedro Porro and Matheus Nunes whilst at Sporting.

“I think he would really like to work with some young talents from Liverpool, you have a lot of young and promising talents in the squad this year; Jarrell Quansah, Connor Bradley, Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas, James McConnell.

“There’s a lot of talent at Liverpool this season that Ruben Amorim could help develop.”

On Amorim’s achievements so far: “He won the Liga Portugal with Sporting in 2021 at a time when the club hadn’t won the title for 19 years, this was quite an achievement and he did it in his very first full season with Sporting.

“In the following season, he took the team to the Champions League round of 16 for only the second time in the competition’s current format.

“I think that he gave back to the club this will to win and be more competitive because, in the last 10 or 15 years, there were seasons where Sporting didn’t really fight for the title here.

“He’s very competitive, he just hates to lose, and he gave Sporting that spirit back.”

On how Amorim would change Liverpool: “He always plays in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, so he always plays with three centre backs, always.

“He sometimes pushed Sebastian Coates as a striker if they were losing.

“Liverpool would have to adapt to this new reality and perhaps sign some new players in the summer transfer window to meet Ruben Amorim’s needs.

“When he was at Braga he was doing the same, so I don’t think he would change the way he sees football in Liverpool.”

On how the fans would react to changes: “Liverpool fans are really patient fans.

“Klopp’s seen as one of the best coaches in the history of the club, but he only won one league title, and I know it was in a difficult era with Manchester City.

“Amorim wouldn’t be obligated, so to speak, to win the title every year. Liverpool would be a good club for him because I think he would have the time and space to work on his idea.”

On Amorim as a person: “Off the pitch, in press conferences or with journalists, he is very calm and very serene and always appears to be honest and genuine in the answers he gives.

“People appreciate the way he communicates and he’s a highly respected coach here in Portugal.

“I think almost no one has doubts about his qualities, his vision of the game and the leadership skills of Ruben Amorim have been praised by both players and even fellow professionals.

“Sometimes he seems to be a bit naive when talking to journalists when asked if a player is injured or fit for a game, he usually says yes or no right away instead of bluffing.”

On José Mourinho comparisons: “I think it’s just because they’re both Portuguese, I don’t see a lot of similarities.

“When Mourinho left Porto in 2004, he’d just won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League, so José had bigger achievements, especially in bigger competitions.

“He was more prepared for a challenge like Chelsea than Ruben Amorim is going to be right now.”

On whether he thinks Amorim is set for the job: “I’m not sure if he is ready for a change, a challenge like this right now.

“He could be the most expensive coach in the world with his release clause being €20m, I think that’s a really big amount for a coach that still has something to prove.

“It’s difficult to say right now that he’s ready to replace Jürgen Klopp. It would be a very, very difficult challenge for him.

“Liverpool would be a great opportunity, I think it would be hard to refuse that as a coach.”

Redmen Reacts

Although nothing is cut and dried in the manager hunt at Anfield it certainly appears as though the Portuguese coach is the main contender for the role on Merseyside.

Whilst it is undoubtedly a huge challenge following Klopp, Amorim certainly appears to have the character embrace the challenge head-on and attempt to emulate the job done by the much-loved German.
