Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers has joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old has made four senior appearances this season with two starts, including an impressive performance in Liverpool’s 5-1 Europa League win over Toulouse in October.

The young fullback previously enjoyed a successful loan spell at Kilmarnock in 2023, helping them to avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership, picking up 16 appearances along the way.

Following injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, Chambers was briefly the only fit-recognised left-back at the club, but with both fullbacks scheduled to return to full training this month, Owen Beck recalled from his spell at Dundee and Joe Gomez performing well in the role, the defender has been allowed to leave until the end of the season.

Born in Preston and joining Liverpool’s academy at the age of six, Chambers will join a Wigan side that currently sit 18th in League One, just four points off the relegation zone.

Speaking on the move, Chambers said: “It’s about getting experience now. I had a little snippet of first-team football back in January, so it’s about building on that and looking to push my career. I can’t wait to get going, show the fans what I can do and hit the ground running.”

With first choice left back Tom Pearce out since November, the teenager will expect to gain valuable minutes under boss Shaun Maloney as he hopes to help gain vital experience in helping Wigan climb the table.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has previously given nothing but praise to the 19-year-old, saying: “He’s a boy with big hopes, he was on loan, done really really well in Scotland. “We 100% believe in him and trust him.”

Whilst Wigan boss Maloney added: “I’m really happy to get Luke through the door. He’s the perfect profile for that left-back position.
“I think Luke’s got a lot of talent, and I’m really happy to have him here.”

Whilst the loan spells haven’t exactly gone to plan so far this term, the market has been good to Liverpool in the past and with both Robertson and Tsimikas expected to be back within the next month, sending out Chambers on loan seems like a sensible option.

The Reds will hope that the young full-back can have a positive impact on the Lancashire side and return ready to play a role in Klopp’s plans moving forwards, not unlike Jarell Quansah who has seen a rapid rise this season following his own spell in League One with Bristol Rovers.

Good luck, Luke.
