As the start of preseason is upon us, let’s take a look at what we can look forward to over the coming days and weeks from a Liverpool side who are looking to get back to their perch and return to at the very least Premier League title challengers after last year’s less-than-memorable season.

Despite an often miserable campaign littered with some stellar moments – see ‘Liverpool seven Manchester United nil’ – with the end of the season nearing, the team went on a seven-game win streak to qualify for a European spot, although it wasn’t exactly the competition they were hoping for.

However, at the end of the storm there is always a golden sky at Anfield and performances from the likes of Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic in the second half of the season meant that Reds could at least feel a sense of renewed optimism heading into the summer.

Ins and Outs

Following some heavy-hearted departures from the likes of James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and the Señor himself: Bobby Firmino. The rejigging of Jurgen Klopp’s ranks has seen some other outgoings including Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay out on loans to RB Leipzig and Preston North End respectively.

More importantly, the replenishment of the squad has also got underway as Liverpool have made much-needed attempts to reinvigorate the midfield department by starting the transfer window off strong by acquiring World Cup-winning centre midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine played a crucial role in getting Brighton to claim their spot in their first-ever European competition.

Hoping to boost the squad even further, 6’1” Hungarian wonderkid Dominik Szoboszlai was signed following a rather whirlwind 48 hours that saw interest emerge and almost instantly we had ourselves a new number eight.

As the Reds – or eight of them at least to begin with – ready themselves for a return to work at the AXA, there is still progress to be made with transfer rumours surrounding other players such as Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.

No Rest For The Reds

Back to the current squad though, with EURO 2024 qualifications underway, we have seen impressive starts from our players such as Andy Roberston, who has captained Scotland to 12 points from the available 12 in their group. Ibrahima Konate has been a rock in defence as Les Bleus are undefeated and top of their group.

Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo were left disappointed by their UEFA Nations League campaign whilst Kostas Tsimikas was a key figure for Greece during their qualification efforts.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been in magnificent form during the mini-summer campaign all the while juggling between positions of RB and RM. It seems like the players are working their hardest to prepare for the upcoming season – as proven by Trent’s reported shortened break in order to be at his peak sooner than expected.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Jones and Harvey Elliott have both played their parts in a wonderful Euro U21 tournament for England as they prepare for a final showdown against Spain in Romania this weekend – the Scouse midfielder, in particular, enjoying a red-hot streak.

Schedule

Set to return on July 8th, albeit only Adrian, Stefan Bajcetic, Fabinho, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Darwin Nunez, Nathaniel Phillips and Thiago Alcantara will report for duty on day one, Klopp will be looking to gather the troops together as soon as possible and get to work.

Elliott and Jones will be handed a short break following their international excursions whilst those who featured for their respective senior national teams will check in on Merseyside on Tuesday, July 11.

The first match for preseason is against Karlsruher SC, a German team in the second division. Hopefully, we’ll able to see some of the youngsters get some decent minutes; including the likes of Ben Doak, Bobby Clark and Conor Bradley.

Liverpool then face BundesligA.2 outfit Greuther Furth behind closed doors in Germany before facing relegated Leicester City and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich as part of the Singapore tour, finishing their build-up to the 2023/23 campaign with a meeting with yet more German opposition in the shape of SV Darmstadt 98 at Deepdale.

What To Expect

Overall, Liverpool have already made quite the advancement from the end of last season and they show no signs of slowing down.

Whilst many eyes will be on Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, pre-season is often a chance for youngsters to catch the eye and you can be sure Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson and the like are all equally as eager to get back out there and right the wrongs of last term!
