Wearing the number nine at Liverpool comes with a great weight of expectation, one that can often act as a burden upon those who proudly wear the shirt.

For every Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler, there’s an El-Hadji Diouf and an Iago Aspas, whilst more recent frontmen such as Fernando Torres and Roberto Firmino have both thrived in their own unique style with the job of being Liverpool’s number nine…

The current incumbent, Darwin Nunez meanwhile continues to divide opinion across the fanbase and in the wider football universe as the Uruguayan punctuates lapses of quality with moments of sheer class.

Albeit former Reds striker Emile Heskey wore the eight during his time on Merseyside, the powerful target man certainly knew plenty about what it takes to win the hearts and minds of the Anfield faithful.

Darwin Nunez Can Score 20 Goals A Season

Heskey, speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest EURO 2024 outright betting markets, said: “I think Darwin Nunez has the potential to score more than 20 goals a season. He’s getting the catches and he always makes the correct runs. He has the opportunity, and the rest will be up to him. You can’t knock his work rate and his willingness to make things happen.

“He just needs to perfect that last little bit. I think he’s a similar player to Fernando Torres, but Fernando went in with a lot more confidence. Darwin’s aim should be to match Fernando’s level, and he’ll then look to better what Torres did.”

Improvement Needed To Get To Torres Level

“Darwin will have to work on his finishing and develop his hold-up play if he wants to match Torres. Nunez is certainly getting better, though, and I’d say he only has to work on that.”

Whilst there is still some way to go for Nunez to even come close to emulating what prime Torres was capable of during his time with Liverpool before that ill-fated move away, there is no doubt that the 24-year-old possesses all the attributes to do exactly that.

Despite being on the receiving end of criticism last term, the enigmatic and often chaotic frontman still ended the season with 15 goals across all competitions. Nunez already looks on course to eclipse that tally this campaign – a sure sign that the ex-Benfica talisman is improving all the time.
