Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool | Things We Learned

Liverpool is held to a 0-0 draw away at Newcastle after a dull performance.

Another low-quality performance again from Liverpool this evening which is something we’re not used to, not quite sure what to make of it, to be honest. This time last season we were going away to the likes of Newcastle or Fulham or West Brom and getting the points with good performances or late winners but we’ve been off the ball recently and have begun to struggle against those ‘lesser’ teams.

I’m not sure if tiredness is coming in to play with the lack of squad depth over recent weeks due to injury after injury so far this season but we just lack intensity in the important moments and we need to do something to fix it.

Mo Salah could have had a hat-trick tonight with some of the chances he had. Trent Alexander-Arnold had opportunities going forward as did Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane so it could have been a completely different game but credit to Newcastle who played well and their goalkeeper who had an outstanding game.

It’s important we move on from these dodgy games and don’t let it affect our performances going forward. We’re ending possibly the worst year in the best place and that is top of the table so you’ve got to take the positives with the negatives.

Return Of Thiago

So so so happy to see Thiago back in the squad and back in a Liverpool shirt for only his third appearance since signing. There was a change in dynamic when he came on and he almost brought a bit of class to our midfield, his passing was good and for being one of the smaller players on the pitch he pretty much won every header he challenged for.

He has been a big miss while out injured over the last few months and he will make a big difference to our team.

Southampton Up Next

Southampton now becomes a huge game for us with only three points separating us and Man Utd with the Red Devils having a game in hand. Southampton has had a good season so far, they’ve lost momentum a little bit but going away to St. Mary’s is always tough so a big performance is needed.

Happy New Year to you all and I wish you a happy and healthy 2021! Let’s hope it’s a good one
