Newcastle 1-3 Liverpool | Things We Learned

Liverpool beat Newcastle by three goals to one at St James Park to finish off what has been a fantastic season.

Job Done

A superb season from Liverpool is topped off with a win away at Newcastle on the final day of the season to make Liverpool’s final points tally of the season 99.

The game definitely did not start how we wanted with Newcastle taking the lead with only 26 seconds of the game gone. A lapse of concentration from the team which is understandable considering the game had barely begun, a great ball and quick thinking from Jonjo Shelvey to spot Dwight Gayle and it was a close call for offside but Neco Williams was just playing him on.

We seemed to let that affect us for the first 10 minutes but after that, we started to get control of the game and it was only a matter of time before we scored a goal. Our equaliser came at the right moment just before half-time with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain working the ball well down the right-hand side, a burst of pace to go past the defender and then he had the time to look up and pick out Virgil Van Dijk who got up well in the air and a lovely looping header sent the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.

The second half was all Liverpool but we couldn’t get the goal and although we have three great layers upfront I wasn’t expecting it to come from any of them. However, Divock Origi then proved me wrong and got us our second of the game with a great goal.  Origi has definitely been more of an impact player from the bench this season but he can still offer us so much and I hope he does stay on for another year.

The big guns then came on for their final appearance of the season and I was expecting it be Mo Salah to be getting the goal considering he was chasing his 20th of the season and he did have a few opportunities but it was Sadio Mane who grabbed our third meaning the game was done and dusted.

Naby Lad

I thought Naby Keita was brilliant today. He worked well both on and off the ball in today’s game and he has been playing great in these last couple of matches. It’s a shame that the season has finished as he was starting to show some good form but no doubt he’ll continue that into next season.

His stats for this game:

92% passing

55/60 passes

2/2 dribbles

3 aerial duels

4/5 tackles

I know this section is about Naby but got to say Minamino looked good today too. Same can be said for Taki, he’s been showing us glimpses of what he can do in the last few matches so its a shame there isn’t a few more games to go for those two but they have a Premier League medal around their neck so I don’t think they’ll be too bothered.

A Remarkable Season

What a season we have had and we end it as Premier League, European and World Champions. Not many can say that.

It was a weird game today for me. I went in to the match knowing we were Champions and wasn’t really expecting an outstanding performance from the team so when Newcastle scored it was annoying and I thought well if we don’t win it doesn’t really matter too much but that’s not the attitude the players have. Obviously they go in to every match wanting to win and there’s been a couple of games since the restart that we haven’t looked out best but today proves just how important every single game is to them. They probably won’t say it but they would have wanted to match Man City’s points tally of 99 and they would not have wanted to end such a remarkable season for the club on a bad note and I’m really glad they didn’t.

A nice few weeks rest now before we have to do it all again and quite frankly, I can’t wait.

Thank You!

Thank you to all of you for reading my articles after the games this season. It really means a lot that you take time after the matches to read what I say. Its been a pleasure being able to give my thoughts after the matches for another season and hopefully, I’ll see you all in the next one!
