On this day in 2011, the Reds signed Luis Suarez from Ajax. Suarez was signed on deadline day along with England forward Andy Carroll after the departure of fan favourite Fernando Torres to Chelsea for £50 million. The Spanish forward appeared in 142 games for the Reds, scoring 81 goals in his 5-year spell at the club. He signed for the club in the summer of 2007 for a club record fee of £20.2million, he made his debut against Chelsea on the 11.08.2007 against Chelsea and marked his first appearance with a goal. He appeared in 33 out of the 38 league matches that season ending the campaign with an impressive 24 goals and came second behind Cristian Ronaldo in the vote for Football Writers’ Player of the Year. The Spaniard didn’t end his first season with the Reds with a winners’ medal but he did shine on the international stage during the summer of 2008. Spain travelled to the Europeans championships in Austria and Switzerland. Torres appeared in all five matches for his country and went on to score the winning goal in the final, this goal meant that he had now scored in European championships’ finals at three different levels (U16, U19 and Senior). The new number nine had a stop start season in 2008/09 with niggling injuries preventing him from appearing in a number of games during the first half of the season with him only scoring five goals in 16 matches. However, Torres made up for lost time in the second half of the season and scored 11 goals in 22 matches. In the 2009/10 season, his goals-per-game ratio was his best yet with him scoring 18 goals in 22 matches and by doing so he became the fastest player to reach 50 league goals. Unfortunately for Liverpool, Torres saw his future elsewhere and he handed in a transfer request in January 2011 with rivals Chelsea snapping up the Spaniard for a fee of £50 million. What looked to be a sad day for both the club and the fans was soon forgotten about when Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez signed for £22.8million, he made an impressive start to his LFC career scoring on his debut against Stoke and with him being restricted to playing only premier league matches he ended the season with 4 goals in 13 appearances. Over the 4 years that he spent at the club he made a total of 133 appearances and scored 82 goals and in the 2013/14 season he became the first Liverpool player to score thirty goals in a season since Fernando Torres in 2007/08, he moved to fifty for the club when he netted at Anfield in the home fixture against Tottenham. Unfortunately, Suarez made a similar resolution as Torres and felt his career ambitions where not suited to Liverpool and in the summer of 2014 he made a £65 million move to Spanish giants Barcelona. We also signed Andy Carroll……….Article by Lauren Black@LaurenBlack9For more Redmen TV content including podcasts, subscriber exclusives and three new shows every week subscribe now and get your first month for FREE bit.ly/RMTVjoin
