On this day in 2001 Liverpool beat Alaves 5-4 in the UEFA Cup Final to complete the treble winning season.

The Reds opened the scoring in the 4th minute after a Gary McAllister free-kick met the head of Markus Babel. Liverpool then doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Steven Gerrard latched onto a Michael Owen through ball and smashed it into the bottom corner of the net.

Alaves pulled one back in the 26th minute after a cross into the box was headed into the back of the net by Ivan Alonso. In the 41st minute Liverpool where given a penalty after Didi Hamman sent a ball into the path of Owen who then rounded the goalkeeper, he was brought down in the area after the keeper tackled him from behind. Gary McAllister stepped up and struck the penalty past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 to Liverpool at half-time.

Alaves came out in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 48th minute through Javi Moreno to make it 3-2. They then equalised in the 51st minute through a free kick that was struck low under the wall allowing Javi Moreno to claim his second of the match. Robbie Fowler was then introduced to the game in the 64th minute, 10 minutes later he was celebrating scoring Liverpool’s fourth of the match after gliding past three Alaves defenders and smashing the ball into the back of the net.

The game was looking like it was going to end 4-3 to Liverpool but Alaves had other ideas and with a corner in the 89th minute Jordi Cryuff made sure they were still in the game with a header at the front post making it 4-4.

The game headed into extra time and with two Alavez players being sent off Liverpool had a free-kick, McAllister whipped the ball into the box and it met the head of Alaves player Delfi Geli and ended up in the bottom corner of the net.

Liverpool finished an incredible season by being crowned UEFA Cup champions adding to their trophy cabinet for the third time that year.
