On this day in 2005: Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea After going through to the champions League final last night I thought it was only right that we revisited this incredible win back in 2005. A Champions League semi-final against Chelsea was never going to be easy and after a 0-0 draw in the first leg both team had all to play for in the second leg. Reports of a cagey opening to the match was squashed when in the third minute John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard and Milan Baros combined to nearly put the Reds ahead. However, Luis Garcia didn’t hang around and put Liverpool ahead with that famous ???Ghost goal’ but looking back on replays Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty anyway due to the challenge on Baros by Petr Cech. There were plenty of shaky moments for Liverpool and Chelsea should have equalised through Gudjohnsen but it wasn’t meant to be and Liverpool progressed into the final where they were going to face Italian giants AC Milan! Liverpool ended up pulling off the greatest comeback of all time to win our fifth European Cup thanks to goal from Gerrad, Alonso and Smicer and an incredible performance by Jerzy Dudek. Let’s hope we can add a sixth European Cup to the trophy cabinet in a few weeks time.
