On this day in 2007 Liverpool went in search of their sixth European Cup against Italian side AC Milan who they beat back in 2005 but this year it wasn’t meant to be.

Our starting X1 that day:

Pepe Reina, Steve Finnan, Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Jermain Pennant, Javier Mascherano, Bolo Zenden, Dirk Kuyt

AC Milan Starting X1 that day:

Dida, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Marek Jankulovski, Massimo Oddo, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Massimo Ambrosini, Filippo Inzaghi

A lot of those AC Milan players also featured in the 2005 final in Istanbul meaning they would not want a repeat of that famous final. Milan took the lead in the 44th minute through Filippo Inzaghi, the free kick deflected off of him and past Pepe Reina into the back of the net.

The reds went into half-time trailing 1-0, which was a better scoreline than Istanbul, and where hoping to come out second half with a better performance. Fast forward to the 82nd minute where Milan extended their lead with Filippo Inzaghi getting his second of the match.

Six minutes later a deflected header from a Jermaine Pennant corner was helped into the back of the net by Dirk Kuyt and a lot of fans were wondering, it this going to happen again?

However, we couldn’t pull of another Istanbul and lost the final 2-1 meaning a sixth European cup was not heading to Anfield but this could all change come Saturday night in Kiev.
