Liverpool continue to find a way to stay with the pace at the top of the Premier League following a 2-0 win over Burnley on Boxing Day. Reds’ frontman Darwin Nunez ended his barren run in front of goal and Diogo Jota returned to action with a bang as Jurgen Klopp’s side left Turf Moor back on the summit.

The Uruguayan striker had previously gone 12 games without finding the net, albeit the manager had been full of praise for his continued improved displays for the Anfield club.

One man who knows a thing or two about scoring goals for Liverpool, and indeed going through a struggle in front of goal, is Emile Heskey. We spoke to the former Merseyside man about Klopp’s current attacking options and in particular, Nunez.

‘He’s got that TENACITY!’ – Emile Heskey on Darwin Nunez’s Potential for Liverpool

Emile said: “This is one key thing I’ll say for Liverpool fans, they’ll give you the benefit of the doubt if you work hard, run around and out yourself about. That’s one of the key things that he’s got. He’s got a tenacity about him.

“(Luis) Suarez was another one that tenacity about him but he put up the numbers. But the fact he ran around, he chased, he kicked people. He didn’t give anyone an inch. And I think Darwin has got that as well.”

“Now it’s just about getting the numbers up, getting that consistency. We’ve seen him score goals and he can score goals, it’s just that consistency. It’s quite erratic. His goal against Burnley was fantastic, he passed the ball into the back of the net, then you’ll see another one that is perceived as easier and he will slash at it.

“So he’s just got to get that consistency. The key thing for him is the performances, make sure your performances are on point because the Liverpool fans will back you to the hilt.”

Were Liverpool nearly robbed by VAR again?

Redmen Reacts

Emile is spot on and it’s been evident that Nunez’s efforts have been greatly received by the Anfield faithful who chant his name at every given opportunity, particularly when the man hailed recently as ‘insane’ by Klopp is clearly working hard for the cause.

Ultimately many will rightly look to the goal tally and compare it to those in years gone by and rivals, but, with Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz making up an attacking quintet, Klopp isn’t as heavily reliant on one man as some.

Whilst goals will remain Nunez’s primary objective and currency, working hard and putting in strong performances will undoubtedly help the side.
