Tomorrow night Liverpool face Red Star in the third match of the 2018/19 Champions League group stage and it is expected to be an interesting game with no away fans being allowed in the stadium due to a ban and the current injury crisis we have at the minute.

Previous Matches

These two teams have faced each other before. Back in 1973 Bill Shankly’s side faced the Serbian team over two legs with Red Star beating what was then an incredible Liverpool side made up of Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan, Steven Highway and Ian Callaghan. But Red Star played fluid and attacking football that seen them come away with the victory both home and away and left Liverpool stunned, it ended up working in our favour though with Bill Shankly and his backroom staff changing the way we played and us dominating Europe for the next decade.

This match will be a throw back to what was a great game but hopefully it will turn out to be a different score.

Current Day

Red Star currently sit top of the Serbian league with 34 points having played twelve games, winning eleven and drawing one. They have dominated that league for a number of years now and are the best in Serbia but they come up against the Reds who are joint top in the Premier League, the most difficult league in the world, so maybe they will come undone in this game.

Red Star are not knew to Europe although they have not succeeded in the competition. Since the mid eighties this club has had plans for winning the European Cup and have come up against some tough opposition. They have made a team out of their youth players as well as bringing in some of Serbia’s best and it is proving to be a well worked plan with them facing opposition like PSG, Napoli and Liverpool just at the group stages.

They gave Napoli a tough time in the opening game and managed to get a 0-0 draw out of that match, however they came undone  away at PSG with that game finishing 6-1 to the Frenchmen.

As you can see from the stats above Paris Saint German absolutely wiped the floor with them and Red Star allowed them to do so.We know this team is capable of causing problems because they did it against a very well put together Napoli side in the opening fixture so it was surprising to see the scoreline of this PSG game considering that they where not at their best against us.

This is a big game for Red Star as they do not have the added factor of their marvellous fans who really know how to create an atmosphere at a game. I am a bit disappointed that they do not have any travelling fans as it would have added so much to the game, I like the back of forth between home and away fans and it gives you that little extra push to sing just that little bit louder than everyone else in the stadium which ultimately spurs the team on more.

But looking at it from a Liverpool fans point of view, it can also benefit it us massively as they do not have that to turn to if they are looking for that extra little bit of support. I have no doubt that numerous Red Star fans have made the journey over to Liverpool to support their team another way but I also have no doubt you will see at least one or two fans inside the stadium.

The Manager – Vladan Milojevic

A total of 79 matches played while he has been manager at Red Star winning 57, drawing 16 and losing only 6, not a bad return. He has proven to be a brilliant manager for this side but having never faced Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp in his managerial career, he may find it a difficult match up.
