One of the few sour notes for Liverpool after their 5-0 demolition of Manchester United was the injury to Naby Keita. Keita was taken off after a studs-up challenge by Paul Pogba that was upgraded to a red card after intervention from the VAR.
Keita has struggled to maintain a starting berth in the side since his move from RB Leipzig in 2018. The injury has continued a streak of bad luck for the Guinean, who was left stranded in his home country due to a coup d’état in September this year. Keita looked like he was coming into a bit of form recently, scoring the opener at Old Trafford after five minutes.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Extra Show, we asked Goal’s Neil Jones to give us any updates on Naby Keita’s condition:
Neil said:
“I think it’s probably what you would describe as good news, the best possible news, it’s not a break, it’s not a ligament problem. Hopefully back at the weekend. Maybe they might leave it for the weekend and stick him back in against Atletico? Although if you’ve got a bruised shin against Atletico, I think there are probably better teams you can face! Hopefully not a serious one, hopefully, potentially back at the weekend.”
Redmen Reacts
Liverpool fans will be pleased to hear Neil’s news that Keita’s injury is not a long term one. The Reds have had trouble with central midfield injuries this season. Coupled with the loss of Gini Wijnaldum to PSG, this has meant a lot more game time than expected for the likes of the evergreen James Milner, who is now out with an injury too.
Hopefully Keita will be back in the starting XI soon, as he has a great opportunity to be a guaranteed starter in Liverpool’s key fixtures over the Christmas period.
It feels as if Keita’s Liverpool career has never really hit top gear, with the next few months being a golden opportunity for him to put in some consistent displays and win over the fans. He need only look to his captain for inspiration as someone who did both, becoming a Liverpool legend in the process.
