“Quite A Public Hint” – Neil Jones On Liverpool Links To World Cup And Premier League Ace

Liverpool put the disappointment of two games without a win behind them last night with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wolves at Anfield. The Reds midfield consisted of the misfiring Fabinho, who put in an improved display, and two teenagers in the form of Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajčetić.

The prospect of a summer rebuild in the middle of the park was ramped up last week with Jürgen Klopp’s comment that there are ‘a lot of really good players out there’, suggesting that the boss is keen to bolster his squad.

Brighton’s, Alexis Mac Allister is one player linked with a possible move to Merseyside. Football Transfers reported that the World Cup winner’s father, Carlos, was at Anfield to watch the defeat to Real Madrid last week, hinting at possible talks between the two parties.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked goal.com’s Neil Jones for his take on the MacAllister story.

LIVERPOOL’S CHANCES OF SIGNING ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER EXPLAINED!

Neil said:

“I don’t know if that’s true that he was at Anfield for the Real Madrid game. He’s a player who should be looking for a move really. If you’ve just won the World Cup and you’re playing for Brighton, no disrespect, you feel like you’ve got opportunities to go somewhere else.

“He’s clearly a player who is having a very good season. He’s probably had a very good couple of seasons. His star is in the ascendancy. I haven’t heard of Liverpool being in for him other than the fact that he’s obviously a very good player, that goes without saying.

“It would be fairly significant if Carlos Mac Allister was there with the Liverpool officials. It would be quite a public hint to drop, to have a player’s father and agent with the club delegation at a match like that.

“Brighton have sold very well in recent years – Cucurella, Ben White, Bissouma, people like that. I don’t think they will be bullied into doing anything that they don’t want to do and certainly not for a fee that they don’t want to sell for.”

 Redmen Reacts

Mac Allister has been impressive domestically for the last 18 months and played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph. At 24, he is the right age profile for a midfield consisting of youngsters and veterans. An obvious sticking point would be the price. As Neil points out, Brighton are one of the best in the league at extracting the maximum possible fee for their players. They held firm in January, despite Moisés Caicedo taking to social media to try and force through a move. If Liverpool managed to land long-term target Jude Bellingham, it seems unlikely that another massive transfer fee will be sanctioned. Mac Allister could potentially serve as target number one should Bellingham move elsewhere. It is yet to be proved whether or not Alexis’s father Carlos met with club officials at the Real Madrid game, but he would certainly not be the first bald Mac Allister to be seen at Anfield!
