Rachel Furness Named In Northern Ireland Squad!

Article by Josh Bunting – @Buntingfootball Rachel Furness has been named in the Northern Ireland squad for the Pinatar Cup next month. The matches in Spain will act as preparation for the Euro 2021 qualifiers with Belarus and the Faroe Islands.Furness who has been an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad since signing in January has 67 caps to her name so far scoring 17 goals. She made her international debut on the 5th March 2005 against Sweden and is eligible for Northern Ireland due to her mother being born in Belfast.The former Sunderland midfielder scored her first international goal against Romania on the 29th October 2005 at the Football Centre Mogoşoaia. Since signing for Liverpool she has scored 2 goals in 3 games including a stunning strike against Arsenal last Thursday in Chester.Her football career began in her home town of Sunderland where she initially spent two seasons before spells with Newcastle and Icelandic team Grindavik. She later rejoined the Black Cats for a further six seasons in 2010.

 There are two new senior call-ups with 16-year-old goalkeeper Lilie Crooks of Mid-Ukstern ladies and Glentoran Women’s Danielle Maxwell who has been part of Northern Ireland’s under-age squads getting the nod. Sheffield United and former Liverpool keeper Becky Flaherty who was named player of the match in the 0-0 draw with Wales at Seaview misses out due to injury.Northern Ireland currently sit 4th in their Euro 2021 qualifying table following two draws with Wales as well as falling to consecutive defeats to top seeds Norway. Sheil’s side kick off their Pinatar Cup campaign against Iceland, ranked 18th in the world, on Wednesday 4 March (kick-off time 2pm, GMT).Next up is Ukraine, currently ranked 27th. That game takes place on 7 March (kick-off time 6pm, GMT).And the last of their matches is against the Scots on 10 March (kick-off time 7.30pm, GMT).
