Liverpool are reportedly looking to make a surprise move for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, with the Magpies potentially needing to sell some big names in order to adhere to Financial Fair Play rulings.

The 26-year-old signed a contract extension until 2028 in October, however with Newcastle currently sitting in 10th place, 11 points off the top four, Guimaraes may potentially be looking for a new challenge if the Magpies fail to finish in Europe this season and are forced to offload some of their biggest names.

According to AS, the Brazilian will leave Newcastle this summer to help ease debts built up over recent seasons, with Bruno going to ‘make the leap to a big club’ once the season is over, as he will be one of the players chosen by the board to help settle accounts.

Only moving to the North-East in January 2022 for a reported fee of £40 million, it’s estimated Bruno’s new contract has a release cause of nearly £100 million that would need to be activated in order to land the midfielder.

However, AS also reported that the payment could be divided into three instalments as Liverpool could potentially pay around £32 million a season for three years to sign the Brazilian.

Since joining Newcastle, Guimaraes has been a standout player at St. James Park, playing a vital role in helping them secure a Champions League place for the first time in nearly 20 years, whilst also being named in Brazil’s 2022 World Cup Squad.

PSG have also been heavily linked to sign the 26-year-old, however may struggle to sign the midfielder as they have their own FFP restrictions, potentially paving the way for Liverpool to swoop in.

Following a high-profile midfield rebuild at Anfield in the summer, which saw the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister join the squad, whether Liverpool will continue to target the middle of the park next summer is yet to be seen, as the focus seems to be switching more towards the defence.

However, £33 million a season for a player who has adapted to the league so well and proven himself to be a fantastic Premier League player, is a no-brainer. He also offers a wide range of versatility, with Reds legend Jamie Carragher saying in 2022: “What we find out with midfield players is we put them in positions in terms of numbers and call them a six, an eight, or a ten. He feels like the type of player who could play all of those roles.”

With Wataru Endo nearly 31 and Mac Allister likely to want to push further forward, the versatility of a player like Bruno could be so valuable to this team. His physicality and technical ability also undoubtedly make him the ideal Jurgen Klopp midfielder.

If Newcastle do opt to sell the Brazilian – who was described as ‘absolutely magnificent’ by Alan Shearer, there’s no doubt the Reds should be all over this one. Whether Eddie Howe’s side would be willing to sell to another Premier League team is another question. But there’s no harm in trying!
