Trent Alexander-Arnold has been labelled a ‘wizard’ by one of his former academy coaches, Anthony Godfrey.

Godfrey, who’s now a director at the 7 Elite Academy, spoke to us about his time working with Liverpool’s academy in which he also compared Trent’s ability on the ball to Steven Gerrard’s.

During his 12-year spell with Liverpool, Godfrey worked in various capacities and helped oversee the development of numerous first-team regulars.

On our Expert Insight show, Godrey said: “What Trent possesses in other areas of the game, I’ll say this, I haven’t seen some of the things in world football that Trent does with the ball. He’s like a wizard. That’s obviously talking in the same breath as Steven Gerrard and the capabilities he had with his ball-striking ability.

“To see Trent there now as the vice-captain, it’s absolutely special. I think the vice-captain role has given him a bit of ownership and accountability to take his game to another level. I’m absolutely delighted for Trent at this moment in time.

“Hopefully he can kick on another level or two and we can see what that looks like.”

Since making his first team debut as an 18-year-old in 2016, Trent Alexander-Arnold has gone from strength to strength and established himself as a true senior player at the club, showcased by Klopp naming him as vice-captain in the summer. Having won everything there is to win at a club level already, the 25-year-old has the opportunity to cement himself as a true Liverpool legend by the end of his career.

It hasn’t always been an easy ride for him, coming under a lot of criticism at times for his defensive performances. But since moving into the more inverted right-back role that we’re becoming so used to, his performances have managed to step up another level yet again, helping Klopp’s side to currently sit top of the table.

As mentioned by Godfrey, Trent’s ability on the ball makes him one of the best players in the world, and with the extent of his current knee injury still relatively unknown, a Liverpool without their vice-captain will forever be a far less intimidating side.
