There has been recent speculation regarding safe standing being implemented into football stadiums.West Brom recently had a bid rejected for safe standing to be put in at the Hawthorns and a lot of fans were disappointed by the outcome. So much so that a petition is making the rounds on social media asking individuals to sign up and show their support for the cause. The best place to start is by asking what is safe standing?Safe standing is a terrace style seating arrangement that gives fans the opportunity to stand at the game with space to move without fear of injury due to rails and guard partitions. Safe standing bays include fold-away seats, bolt-on seats or rail seats. They can be locked into a rail to allow room for active supporters as well as be folded down for other events like Champions league/Europa League matches. You have to look at the amount of clubs in Europe who have safe standing in their stadium and see if it can change English football for the better. Germany has led the way in the safe standing debate with most clubs in the Bundesliga already having safe standing in their stadium. Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and a handful of other countries all followed suit as well over the other side of the world in Australia and is also featured in some MLS stadiums including Orlando City. You’ve also got to look at Russia who probably have the wildest fans in football, CSKA Moscow have safe standing areas that have rail seats behind both goals in their stadium. Scottish team Celtic also have safe-standing implemented in their ground and fans say that although the atmosphere was incredible inside the ground, it is now electric. It is fair to say that the majority of Premier League clubs like the idea of having safe standing areas at their stadium. Clubs like Tottenham, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Swansea are all pushing for safe standing with West Brom recently having a proposal rejected by the government to have a safe standing area at their ground. The scheme would have meant that 3,600 seats in the Smethwick End were converted to ???rail seats’ and wanted them in time for next season. The law to abolish safe standing was introduced following the Taylor Report which made recommendations after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Being a Liverpool fan and knowing the history regarding safe standing makes it a difficult situation. It was recently the 29thAnniversary of the Hillsborough disaster which claimed the lives of 96 men, women and children due to a human crush in the North stand at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield in April 1989.I think majority of the teams in the Premier League would vote yes to the idea of safe-standing with Liverpool being the only team that may abstain for obvious reasons. I think the club itself would be against the idea as well as a lot of fans but I think a good majority of supporters would be interested in the idea of safe-standing coming back to Anfield especially on the Kop as that is the heart and soul of a game, that’s where all the singing starts off with loads of banners appearing there too. There is also the possibility of Everton abstaining to show their solidarity with Liverpool as it is still a delicate topic to discuss on Merseyside. The Taylor report into the events that happened at Hillsborough, whose recommendations led to all stadiums abolishing standing in the top divisions suggested that match goers would become accustom to sitting down at the game but have they? You see it in games every week, people standing in front of their seats, not so much in the Premier League (It does not happen often at Anfield) but more so in the lower leagues. This can cause arguments amongst fans because some people will be sitting meaning that their view is blocked causing more hassle for stewards because they then have to tell fans to sit down.A topic like this will always divide opinion but it is only fair to give everyone a say on the matter and that we should not assume that people affected by Hillsborough would be opposed to safe standing. Lou Brookes lost his brother at Hillsborough and he said ???I know my brother would have hated sitting. Standing didn’t kill my brother, other factors did’.Fans are certainly interested in following in the footsteps of some Bundesliga clubs with 92% of fans in England and Wales wanting a choice between sitting and standing. It is surprising that the Premier League haven’t raised the issue properly when the relevant people like club owners and chairman are aware of the strength of support that people have towards the issue and look at reaching the point where the authorities have to realise it is time they start thinking seriously about it.Do you think Football should introduce safe standing in stadium and do you Liverpool should look into it?
