The most recent debate amongst Liverpool fans is should the Reds be looking to sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window?
In my opinion, I think we should be looking to bring in a new keeper and finally try and get someone who will be our permanent number one for a while. We have not had a solid keeper since Pepe Reina and when he left we failed to replace him. Brendan Rodgers brought in Simon Mignolet in the summer of 2013 and he has made a total of 155 appearances in all competitions for the club and although he has had his fair share of good times in a red shirt, he hasn’t proven to be the answer to our defensive woes. He currently ranks low in the league for saves per goal (1.21) and he is only making 1.53 saves per 90 minutes.
When Klopp came in and bought the second best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga we all thought our prayers had finally been answered and we could look forward to having a new number 1 for the coming seasons but that hasn’t been the case, Karius has failed to make an impact at Anfield and has only made 15 appearances in a Red shirt since he signed from Mainz in the summer of 2016.
There has been recent links with Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid, I think this would be an excellent choice as he is an established goalkeeper having played for Atletico since 2014. He has made 20 appearances in all competitions so far this season and has kept 12 clean sheets and looks the most likely to solve our goalkeeping problems but there has been no bid made for the Slovenian this month.
I think we should also be looking at Alisson Becker from Roma, he has been dubbed ???the new kid on the block’ by the media, the Brazil international is averaging 2.56 saves per 90 minutes and makes 3.83 saves per goal, this means he is making three times as many saves as Mignolet. He has made 20 appearances this season and has a total of 9 clean sheets which isn’t as good as Oblak but is better than Mignolet and Karius this season.
If Liverpool also want to think long term then they should be looking at Alban Lafont, the teenagers has made a name for himself in the French league this season playing for struggling side Toulouse and is rivalling Gianluigi Donnarumma for the most promising young goalkeeper in Europe. He has made 21 appearances this season and has kept 6 clean sheets but you can’t help but think of the potential he has considering he has made a total of 59 career appearances and is still only 19 years old.
