Earlier this week, Liverpool fans may have been worried that Diogo Jota would not have been ready to face Watford after he didn’t play in Portugal’s three international games over the break.

However, Jurgen Klopp revealed yesterday that he expects Jota to be available for selection, which is a huge relief for Reds fans across the world.

Whilst many fans were aware that Jota had an injury issue, not many people knew the specifics of it so on our Journo Insight Extra show, we asked Neil Jones, Goal’s Liverpool correspondent, for more information.

He said:

“There was some fatigue in his hamstring or the back of his leg, I think that’s where it comes from. Portugal’s situation helped, they didn’t  have the toughest schedule, it was Luxembourg they played most recently, so they didn’t need Diogo Jota for that game.”

It seems as though the Portuguese national set up did Liverpool, and Jota, a big favour by letting him rest his fatigued hamstring rather than picking him to play against Azerbaijan, Qatar and Luxembourg, which they very easily could have done.

Given the fact that Jota didn’t do much, if any, training with Portugal and that he’s only returning to training with Liverpool on Thursday, it’s unlikely that he’ll start at Watford but he should be on the bench, which is a big positive as he’s a much better option to bring on if the side are searching for a goal than Divock Origi.

Not all national team set-ups would be as good to a player or a club as Portugal were to Jota and Liverpool, so credit to them for putting the player ahead of their own needs as they’d surely have wanted Jota to feature in at least some, if not all, of their three games.
