It was reported in The Athletic last week that Liverpool’s Sporting Director Michael Edwards was likely to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

However, speaking to us on Transfer Insight EXTRA, Goal’s Neil Jones gave us a major update on the situation, passing on what he’d been told by a source inside Liverpool.

He said:

The Athletic were the guys who wrote, I think they said words to the effect that, he’s informed Liverpool of his desire to leave and that he’s not going to sign a new contract.

The people I’ve spoken to at Liverpool have said that’s not necessarily the case, that there’s still an ongoing dialogue, a little bit like what was said about (Jordan) Henderson, very similar.”

Redmen Reacts

Given how amazing Liverpool’s transfer business has been since Jurgen Klopp and Edwards began to work together, it’s understandable by The Reds would want to keep the latter at the club and why many fans were upset when they heard that he could be leaving.

However, Jones’ information, passed on from those inside Liverpool, is a huge boost for supporters as it shows that there is still a chance that the transfer guru will put pen to paper on a new deal and stay at the club for a long time.

Liverpool made some absolutely horrendous transfer decisions in the not-too-distant past and the worry is that they could do the same if the man ultimately in charge of acquisitions and sales leaves.

Hopefully, like Henderson just did, Edwards will sign a new contract too and continue to have success in the market for years to come.
