Speaking exclusive to our very own Paul Machin on our Journo Insight Extra show, The Athletic’s James Pearce has confirmed that people behind the scenes at Anfield are very confident that Harvey Elliott will return to action at some point this season after having surgery on his dislocated ankle.

The teenager suffered the horrific injury during Liverpool’s win over Leeds United at Elland Road last weekend and given the severity of it, Reds fans would have been forgiven if they thought that Elliott would be out for the entire campaign, if not longer.

However, on the back of The Reds putting out a statement saying that Elliott had undergone surgery on his ankle, James told Paul that people behind the scenes at Liverpool are optimistic that the former Fulham star will be back in action before the end of the season.

He said:

“That’s certainly been backed up by the people I’ve spoken to, that the surgery went well and now it’s full steam ahead on what will be a long rehab but I think the fact that Liverpool, in their statement, said that there was a confidence that he would play again is a really promising sign and I think that will energise Harvey in terms of his rehab.”

The fact that people behind the scenes are telling Pearce that they expect Elliott to feature again this season is a major positive. Liverpool are often extra-cautious with injuries and they won’t rush the teenager, so the fact they are giving Pearce this information shows that they are very confident that the surgery went well and that we’ll see Elliott again at some point in the New Year.

That’s great news for the player himself, who’d started to make himself a first-team regular, and also for the fans of the club who’ve really taken a shine to Elliott, not only because he’s an excellent young player but also because he’s been a very impressive young man.
