It’s been a rollercoaster ride in the life of a Liverpool supporter over the last few days as The Reds went from a lengthy Romeo Lavia pursuit, a big money hijack attempt to sign Moises Caicedo and a disappointing 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge to licking their wounds to being left empty-handed in the defensive midfielder pursuit and wondering where to turn next.
Whilst various names have been linked over the summer and could well be explored once again, none of the candidates are ideal for Jurgen Klopp’s side for one reason or another, a reality now facing the Anfield recruitment team.
Dan spoke to Chief LFC writer for the Liverpool Echo, Ian Doyle to get his take on what happens next for The Reds this summer…
‘Liverpool Think Lavia Will Go To Chelsea.’ | Ian Doyle on the Romeo Lavia Situation
Ian said: “They might just have to change their approach for this particular time. Because you can’t just keep on buying players who are dead young forever.
“Liverpool did that and then all the players got old together at the same time. Everybody last season quite rightly said the team was too old. They got rid of the old ones and suddenly the team is really young and everyone is going ‘We’ve got too many young players’.
“They need to get that balance – in the midfield, I’m referring to. Liverpool can’t go wasting any time chasing players who aren’t going to go for them.
“The state of play is everybody knows Liverpool need a defensive midfielder, Klopp said it, Liverpool clearly admitted that by making these massive bids for these players. Everybody knows they’ve got the money to buy them so now the question is ‘What are you going to do?’
“It’s not on Klopp, it’s not on the owners. it’s on the recruitment team. They have to be able to go to Klopp and say ‘We can get you this player, this player or this player’ and he says ‘Okay, get that one.’

Redmen Reacts
Spot on from Ian, unfortunately with time fast running out and the Premier League already underway, the time for stalling, lengthy negotiations and waiting for the opportune moment has been and gone.
As such, those targets who for whatever reason have fallen by the wayside are now back in the equation for The Reds and any doubts over fees, injuries or age have to be parked for the time being in order to ensure Liverpool aren’t short of specialists for specialist roles beyond the September 1st transfer deadline.
Crucial days ahead…
