Liverpool are reportedly one of the clubs keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz ahead of a potential summer move.

As per Sport BILDs Christian Falk, The Reds have joined a host of clubs both in England and on the continent who’ve been showing an interest in the 18-year-old, although Bayern Munich are said to be leading the race for his signature.

When asked about Wirtz by Paul Machin on our Journo Insight Extra show, Goal’s Liverpool correspondent said:

Bayer Leverkusen have got a bit of production line of bringing through good players in recent years, you look at Julien Brandt, Leon Bailey who’s gone to Aston Villa this season, Kai Havertz, Benny Henrichs who moved on, Emre Can who Liverpool got out of Leverkusen a few years back etc. They are one of those club’s who are seen as good stock, along those lines. There’s a few clubs in Europe like that, if you’re seen doing well for, like Bayer Leverkusen, you’re worth looking at.

Whenever you speak to someone at Liverpool about a young player who is playing football at a good level and ask ‘are you looking at him?’, they say ‘of course we are, why would we not?’

If a 16, 17, 18 is playing in the Championship or League One, Liverpool are on top of that because he’s obviously got an awful lot of talent to be playing first-team football.

“[Wirtz] looks a good player, he’s had a good start to the season, he’ll probably play tonight in the Europe League against Celtic and I’m sure Liverpool fans might keep a close eye on that one. The word I’ve had, and it’s not just from CF Bayern but from the contacts of our German correspondents at Goal, is that Bayern fancy it and that there’s a very good chance of him going there.”

Redmen Reacts

After making his first-team debut aged just 16, the man dubbed by some as ’the new Kai Havertz’ has scored 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 53 appearances for Leverkusen, which highlights the promise he has.

The German international’s versatility is also another reason why he could be a more than useful addition at Liverpool.

He’s used to playing in a number of different positions having been deployed as a midfielder, winger, number ten and striker in his short career so far.

Whilst Bayern Munich seem keen sign Wirtz as Neil told us – which is a blow to Liverpool’s chances of getting a deal done – Michael Edwards should be doing all he can to look to hijack that move and get the promising young German star to Anfield.
