Liverpool have confirmed their first summer signing in the shape of Alexis Mac Allister in a deal worth an initial £35million according to numerous reports.
The Reds have started their summer rebuild in strong fashion as Jurgen Klopp attempts to fashion a side strong enough to compete for major honours once again following a difficult season.
However, speaking on the latest edition of Journo Insight, Neil Jones has revealed that the Anfield club were anxious over the possibility of Real Madrid – the side who had already landed Jude Bellingham and Aurélien Tchouaméni under the nose of Liverpool – making a late move for the 24-year-old World Cup winner.

Neil said:
“I’m told that the worry Liverpool had was Real Madrid actually in this. They were the stalking horse in the race.
“There was a lot of talk about Chelsea and Manchester United being in there but I believe Liverpool’s biggest worry was Real Madrid.
“If you think about the clients, Allan, Ancelotti, an Ancelotti player, there’s a relationship there, there are a few Brazilians who worked with Ancelotti – from that stable. There was a worry that maybe Real Madrid would just see an opportunity- why wouldn’t you at £35million?
“Thankfully, Liverpool, for the fans, it didn’t turn out that way and Liverpool had a pretty clear run at it.”

Given the nature of the deal, the outgoing Sporting Director and all those associated will be delighted with how quickly they were able to land such a high-quality operator at a bargain price, especially given the reported levels of interest from elsewhere.
Signing a player of Mac Allister’s already proven prowess is a superb piece of business so early in the summer and Reds will be hoping more will follow as the transfer window and the incoming can become a catalyst for a far more positive campaign in 2023/24.
