James Pearce tells us why Loris Karius chose to stay at Liverpool this summer even though he has zero chance of playing

In an interview with Paul Machin on our Journo Insight Extra show, The Athletic’s James Pearce has revealed the reason why Loris Karius didn’t secure a move away from Liverpool this summer, despite the fact that he has pretty much no chance of playing any football this season.

Karius hasn’t played a competitive game for The Reds since that fateful Champions League final in Kyiv and after a few less than successful loans, he’s now back at Liverpool but he hasn’t even been registered to play games.

Pearce revealed that Karius was offered the chance to move to Swiss side FC Basel, either on a permanent deal or on loan, but he refused as making that switch would have meant he’d be taking a pay cut, which he wasn’t prepared to do.

He said:

“There was no bad feeling between him and Liverpool over the fact that he didn’t want to go to Basel. He was given that opportunity, there was a deal on the table, Liverpool were prepared to accept but he couldn’t agree personal terms. Then, Basel came back and said ‘how about a loan?’ because Liverpool would have been happy just to get his wages off the table for the final year of his contract but again, he wasn’t prepared to take a small sacrifice to his salary.”

As Pearce went on to say in the interview, not many people would take a job offer that meant they’d be taking a pay cut but for the overall good of his career, it’s hard to see why Karius didn’t accept such a loan move.

Yes, he’d have earned a bit less money each week but he’d have the chance to play regular football and put himself in the shop window ahead of becoming a free agent next summer, where a decent salary and signing on fee could have been achievable.

Now, the German won’t play a game for a season and it’s hard to see many clubs prepared to splash the cash, in terms of wages, for a free agent ‘keeper who hasn’t played for a whole season.

It looks like Karius has got this one wrong.
