Sporting Director Michael Edwards is considered by many to be one of the main architects of Liverpool’s recent success.
Reports emerged last summer that Edwards was set to leave Liverpool at the end of his contract, but this has not been confirmed by either the club or Edwards himself. Rumours had circulated this week that RB Leipzig may be interested in appointing the 41-year-old but Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has since poured scorn on those suggestions.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Goal’s Neil Jones to give us his opinion on the likelihood of the successful Sporting Director staying on at Liverpool beyond his current contract.
Neil said:
“From what I’m told, Michael Edwards’s future is up in the air. The story is that he has a contract until the end of this season and it’s not signed. Liverpool haven’t really resigned themselves to the fact of Michael Edwards leaving. I think they still want him to stay or still believe there’s a chance he can stay. I know there’s been some succession planning, with Julian Ward being promoted into the Assistant Sporting Director role, but I don’t think it is cut and dried that he leaves. I don’t think it is cut and dried that Julian moves into the main chair at this stage. I think there’s still some negotiating and some changes to come.”
Redmen Reacts
Michael Edwards has played a major role in Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp. Him and his recruitment team have made plenty of big signings have tended to work, with some of their cheaper purchases also becoming first team regulars. Edwards and his team have also been brilliant at getting top dollar for outgoing players. The combined fees received for Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke, Danny Ward and Jordon Ibe roughly equates to the outlay on Virgil Van Dijk.
We think that most Liverpool fans would be absolutely buzzing if Michael was to continue in his role for a few years yet. Edwards has been in the job for over ten years now, and may simply fancy a new challenge but according to Neil, it seems that reports suggesting that he will definitely leave may be jumping the gun. That people inside the club think Edwards could stay should be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters.
