As Liverpool’s midfield rebuild seemingly draws closer to finishing, rumours have begun spiralling regarding Jurgen Klopp’s want for a left-footed centre-back. Throughout the transfer window, the Reds have been linked to Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven, though more recently they have been linked to Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.
Colwill spent last season making trying to establish himself as one of England’s biggest names as he spent the season on loan at Brighton. He helped the Seagulls to secure European football for the first time in their history, with the seaside club aiming to rival Liverpool in signing the player permanently.
To find out more about the centre-back potentially making a move to Merseyside, Dan Clubble spoke to David Lynch on this week’s Transfer Insight show.
David Lynch says Romeo Lavia is Liverpool’s ‘ideal’ midfield signing!
David began by saying that Liverpool would “absolutely love to” sign the player and that if they were given even a hint that they could sign the player then Liverpool would do it.
The freelance journalist carries on by saying “I think they really like him. He’s homegrown, he fits the bill in so many ways and he would be the ideal signing in that position. It’s a difficult one though. Brighton have already given up and are going for Calvin Bassey instead because they didn’t get the impression they could get a deal over the line. But Liverpool have got a lot more money than Brighton and have the ability to do a deal at a higher amount than what Brighton are were able to do.
“Maybe it will get to a point where he won’t sign a contract and there aren’t enough guarantees over playing time then that’s when Liverpool will make a move. I know there has been contact on the agent’s side and they are keeping tabs on the player. It’s one that if they got even the slightest hint they could do a deal with Chelsea then they would pay a big fee for him.”
The reliable journalist mentions how morale issues at Chelsea could also make the player think about leaving Cobham this summer.
“There’s some morale issues at Chelsea in the aftermath of Mason Mount leaving, a feeling around how are academy players treated. [Mason Mount] Was a homegrown player that Chelsea should have done absolutely everything to keep hold of and instead went down the route of signing expensive alternatives, which just seems crazy to me. It’s a club in a bit of chaos at the minute and it shows that the path is not there, they don’t want to use their academy players and they don’t see them as the crown jewels in this whole project.
“If Colwill is looking at any of that and feels he will be better served going elsewhere then Liverpool will look like a very, very attractive option I’m sure”
Redmen Reacts
Colwill – who was described as ‘fantastic’ by Lewis O’Brien – looks set to represent a big club next season, and for Liverpool, it would make sense if it was them. He is left-footed, fits the homegrown quota and would slot straight into the new formation that the team has ran with since Arsenal at home last season.
While the final price tag may be a record fee, it would be brilliant for Liverpool if they could see the deal through. The impact on the team is similar to the impact that the signings of Van Dijk and Alisson had, the Englishman would simply just take us to that next step that we fell off of last season.
The deal will likely drag out due to Chelsea not wanting to sell, but if Colwill is eager to join then maybe a deal could be struck up soon.
