Liverpool surprised many by making one of the most high-profile signings of the January transfer window by bringing in Luis Diaz. The Reds moved to sign the Colombian after interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options have been suitably bolstered for an assault on four trophies between now and the end of the season.

Could Klopp’s attacking arsenal be yet to improve further? Sky Germany have reported Bayern Munich are engaged in a game of ‘contract poker’ with star winger Serge Gnabry over a new deal.  The 26-year-old’s deal expires in the summer of 2023, with clubs including Liverpool and Manchester United circling as potential suitors.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Goal.com’s Neil Jones if he believes there is any firm interest from the Reds in the Germany international.

Neil said:

“Interesting player, Serge Gnabry – great story. Top talent, top player. I don’t see him coming to Liverpool. The age he is at and the calibre of player that he is to Bayern, I think that is one of those that they are getting done. I saw a story yesterday saying that their focus is on renewals. I don’t expect Gnabry to be one that they’ll let go. I think they will find a way, but it is interesting that Liverpool are one of the ones thrown in the mix. I don’t know whether that is just a handy name, Liverpool and Manchester United are always a handy name to throw into anything like that. I haven’t heard anything about Liverpool looking to sign him… yet! I think Gnabry will stay at Bayern.”

Gnabry’s rise from West Brom reject to top European talent in just a few years has been amazing to watch. He will hopefully serve as a real inspiration to those struggling to break into Premier League first team squads. Bayern Munich have been on the losing side in their last two games of ‘vertragspoker’, with David Alaba and Nicolas Süle both failing to sign a new deal and agreeing contracts with European rivals.

Sky Germany report one potential stumbling block is Gnabry’s wage demands of around £250,000 a week. Liverpool do not tend to hand contracts of that size out on an incoming player, preferring to bring in a player on lower wages and then potentially increase to around that amount. Much depends on Liverpool’s very own game of high stakes contract poker with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. Gnabry would seem an unlikely signing if the pair remain at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
