On the latest edition of the Expert Insight show, Dan Clubbe was joined by sports journalist for Aberdeen Live, Ruaraidh Britton to discuss everything, Leighton Clarkson. The young Liverpool midfielder currently plays on loan at Aberdeen and has been instrumental in the side’s third-place finish this season. The Englishman has registered five goals and eight assists in 34 appearances, which has left the Dandies fans licking their lips. Britton, who specialises in Scottish Football, was more than impressed by the loanees’ performances this season.
“I think he’s been a brilliant, brilliant addition” He said, “I think there were a few doubts about him coming in, after his loan spell with Blackburn last season but he instantly got the fans on side with a debut. A couple of weeks later he scored a screamer against St Johnstone, and everyone thought, this kid is fantastic!”

The youngster has made a habit of scoring ‘worldies’ this season, we’ve already established the screamer against St Johnstone, and he’s also been nominated for goal of the season for a strike against reigning champions Rangers. Clarkson also has an eye for a pass with Ruaraidh claiming, “nine times out of ten it’s him with the assist”.
The Aberdeen boss has been deploying Clarkson in a deep-lying role, where he has been able to make late surges into the box which has increased the midfielder’s output tremendously. The Aberdeen Lie reporter was very complimentary about his passing range and even compared him to an Anfield star.
“He got an assist against Rangers which was a bit Trent Alexander- Arnold-esque against Rangers the other week, it not necessarily been getting on the scoresheet, but he’s been able to dictate the attack.”
The Reds are keen on bringing midfielders in this summer so Clarkson’s return could be a welcomed one. One thing Klopp’s side has lacked is quality in depth the squad has looked leggy since match day one, especially Fabinho, who the youngster will be able to provide cover for.
Brittan is hopeful Aberdeen can keep hold of Clarkson for next season after his successful loan spell.
“I know there’s a common conception that Championship football is better than the Scottish Premier League but after the Blackburn loan spell he had he might question it.” He said.
Redmen Reacts
I’d be surprised if Liverpool doesn’t send Clarkson back out on loan, I don’t really see how he gets into the team at the minute especially with new arrivals pending, I don’t think Klopp will want to embed too many new faces into the system it might become unsettling.
