Written by: Daniel Ghorbal @GhorbalDanFollowing on from a rather disappointing trip to Shrewsbury on the weekend, spirits will hopefully be lifted once more as the Premier League leaders travel to a struggling West Ham side this Wednesday. After a bright start to the rebirth of David Moyes’ tenure with a 4-0 win vs Bournemouth, the Hammers have dropped into 17th and been dumped out of the FA cup by Championship side West Brom.Facing a team unbeaten in 40 league games is exactly what Moyes doesn’t need, with form suggesting that it is improbable that West Ham will take anything from this encounter. One glimmer of optimism heading into the game is through Liverpool’s injury news, with the club confirming that Sadio Mane will miss this fixture through his injury sustained at Wolves. Despite this though, West Ham have been the architects of their own downfall in recent weeks, making costly mistakes at key points in a game that lead to goals/ put them firmly on the back foot.Against the world champions, it is vital that West Ham’s defenders do not over play out from the back, knowing that Liverpool will be waiting to pounce upon any loose balls. The likes of Aaron Cresswell and Angelo Ogbonna have been the main culprits of this demise for West Ham, so perhaps Moyes will be looking at freshening up his side just 4 days after an FA cup fixture.

Going forward, West Ham have been rather toothless too, struggling to create chances at a premium which’ll have worried the board supposing the money they spent in the summer. The likes of Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Sebastian Haller simply haven’t delivered enough goal contributions this season, and West Ham’s main source of goals has either been through the penalty spot or through set pieces, with Robert Snodgrass’ delivery catching the eye on occasions. The Irons may see this as one potential avenue to explore, knowing that they’ll struggle to create genuine goal scoring opportunities against a side of Liverpool’s defence organisation and calibre. In this fixture last season, it was a piece of improvisation that earned West Ham a point, scoring from a well worked quick free kick. This fixture could not have came at a worse time for West Ham, but if they can start well in the game and get the crowd up for the occasion, then who knows what could happen. Nonetheless, one lapse of concentration against a world class attacking unit could be disastrous and this could certainly have the potential to unravel quickly for the Hammers.Written by: Daniel Ghorbal @GhorbalDan
