Liverpool Fall To Defeat Against Nottingham Forest
By: Shane Brennan.
Liverpool took on Nottingham Forest at the City ground on Saturday, as The Reds were looking to cap off a pretty good week with a third league win in a row. But just what exactly did we learn from the game?
Jurgen Klopp’s charges created the first real significant chance of the game, through a quite brilliant pass from Harvey Elliott Fabio Carvalho took the ball down well, and he ended up being one on one with Henderson, sadly, Henderson came out on top as he produced a fine save with his legs.
Forest were to have the next chance of the game, as Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi combined to set up Cheikhou Kouyaté to have a powerful shot at goal, thankfully the attempt went straight at Alisson Becker as Liverpool survived a scare.
Then Awoniyi was at it again as he ran straight at the Liverpool defence, he ended up picking out Jesse Lingard, as he tested out Alisson, the save was comfortable, but Liverpool were easy to get at and they were wide open, as alarm bells started to sound.
Virgil van Dijk had a massive chance before the break, as he simply had a free header in the box with only Henderson to beat, but somehow instead of heading the ball towards Henderson’s goal, he tried to head the ball back across the ball goal for one of his teammates to knock into the net, sadly they could not oblige, as a glorious chance was spurned.
Liverpool struggled to break down Nottingham Forest’s low block defence all day, and things were to go from bad to worse when Joe Gomez brought down Awoniyi, a free kick was awarded, and when Morgan Gibbs-White found Morgan Gibbs-White he played a lovely ball into the box, that found Awoniyi in space, he hit the post with his first attempt, but luck wasn’t on the visitor’s side, as the ball came straight back to the former lesser-seen Anfield man, as he tucked the ball away, to leave Liverpool in big trouble.
The visitors almost equalised when James Milner picked out Elliott, as the young Englishman found himself in space, as he got a decent shot away, but it was just one of those days for The Reds because Henderson got down to his right to make a crucial save.
Forest almost doubled their lead through Gibbs-White, as forest broke at pace, but for the second time in a week, James Milner was on hand to make a goal-saving block.
Kouyaté raced forward once again, when Liverpool lost possession once again, he managed to find Brennan Johnson but Alisson was there, as he got down well to his left to keep The Reds in with a glimmer of hope.
Towards the end of the game Forest tired and Andy Robertson managed to find Trent Alexander-Arnold in the box, he powered a header towards the goal, which forced Henderson into making an excellent save.
Gibbs-White sent Ryan Yates through on goal, and he should have wrapped the game up for a Forest side that showed plenty of determination and effort on the day.
Liverpool had one last chance to grab an equaliser, from an Andy Robertson corner, Van Dijk once again had a free header, but not for the first time on the day Henderson produced an astonishing save.
Conclusion
And so that was it, as Liverpool left The City Ground empty-handed, and it back to the drawing board for Klopp’s men after the high of the Manchester City game last week and the good victory over West Ham, the Reds came crashing back down to earth with a bang, and in all truth, Nottingham Forest deserved all three points.
