If there was no coronavirus, Liverpool’s spending could have been a lot more near Chelsea’s than it currently is. The transfer window doesn’t close for around another month, so transfers can still happen when the season starts. In previous seasons, Jurgen Klopp likes to have his squad ready for the start of the season but we are in unprecedented times. The player sales of players such as Marko Grujic, Nat Phillips and Harry Wilson will mean that there is more chance of potential signings and if Gini Wijnaldum goes to Barca per the reports in Spain, that will open the door to another midfielder to come in to the squad. Many Liverpool fans cannot understand why their club seems unwilling to buy players. Surely they should be awash with cash after winning the Champions League and then the Premier League? This thread looks at where the money has gone and suggests why they are not buying #LFC

Another thing that needs to be taken into account is that at the start of last season Chelsea sold Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard to Atletico and Real Madrid respecitively. They then had a transfer ban but did sign Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic in that time, they also let Willian and Pedro go for free this season so their wages are off the wage bill. So they had the rest of the money from the outgoings plus space on the wage bill for more players.Liverpool do not have this luxury, while last season the only purchases were Harvey Elliott, Sepp Van Den Berg and Takumi Minamino, they also signed up several first team players to long-term contracts and only sold Dejan Lovren and Simon Mignolet, two players who weren’t on high wages. Liverpool’s current wage bill is only lower than the two Manchester clubs in the Premier League.Liverpool definitely need signings, but there is no need to panic until the deadline, a new centre back option is needed with the departure of Dejan Lovren, and a new midfielder will be needed if there is an outgoing. Another option in the forward line could be needed with the injury problems Xherdan Shaqiri has had in recent memory as well. If the money is right, I have confidence that Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp will get the players they think are needed to compete this season every single match day.
There is also an understandable panic, stress and worry about Liverpool’s lack of movement in the transfer window and that reason is Timo Werner. Liverpool were in prime position for the forward and for the reasons explained, missed out. Chelsea took advantage of that. The way things are mapping out, the same could happen with Thiago. He’s a world class, well experienced midfielder who we all want, I can’t begin to imagine the fume if after all this he doesn’t join us.As suggested by Graeme Souness at the weekend, Liverpool should be out there adding quality to the side whilst being in a strong position, not to say that won’t be there soon, but with a condensed season the risk of injuries increases and the lads have less time to recover for games. Liverpool have come close to titles and missed out, events following that meant we lost some of our best players and went backwards. Now we are over that line, we have won the league, we want to make the most of it and assert our dominance both in England and in Europe.Jurgen doesn’t typically like big squads but we are seeing youth players being integrated a lot more, this comes with the fear of the unknown for fans. Every game for Liverpool is must win. Because we are used to signings which have been sensationalised by the likes of Sky Sports we don’t often trust youth. And given the standard of Liverpool is so high now, the pressure is unreal.Seeing other teams add to their squads also furthers the stress and panic. But remember, everyone is trying to catch up with us. We are the benchmark and we can still get better. We all want Liverpool to be successful, we all want more trophies and we all want to win the Premier League this season. There is still plenty of time for things to change and for Liverpool to make moves in the market, there is no need to panic.Written by Jack Bailey – -@thebaileys22Let us know your thoughts on Liverpool’s transfer dealings so far, or lack of in the comments below!Conspiracy, rants and resentment: Transfers are meant to be fun, not a toxic funnel for abuse…
