The Redmen TV…….an open letter

An open letter to the viewers and subscribers of Redmen TV regarding the break up of the Super League, ownership of Liverpool Football Club and the future of football….

We along with many other outlets have been covering the outrageous European Super League news this week. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during this time. We’ve felt emboldened and invigorated by the togetherness of football fans around the world and we will continue to fight for what we believe is right.

The shut down of the Super League is a battle which has been won but the fight for a football that we believe in has only just begun.

We wholeheartedly stand for reforms in football. These reforms need to address a myriad of issues including the distribution of money down the whole football pyramid. Racism in football needs addressing and inequality in all its forms. There needs to be, in our opinion, fan representation on the board of every club in the land. Fairer ticket prices, greater consideration on kick off times and ease of access to tickets for young fans must be factored in. We also need to urgently address the new Champions League format, proposals for an expanded Club World Cup, and the knock on impact on our domestic cup competitions. Hopefully, and perhaps most importantly, we believe in exploring and pursuing something similar to the German 50+1 fan ownership rule. This list is by no means exhaustive and I’m sure there are countless things that are important to us all.

With regards to the ownership of Liverpool FC, and the next steps, there will of course be a difference of opinion amongst the Liverpool fan base, but now is not the time to turn on each other. There is a collective feeling that football needs to change and this can be achieved if we all stand together.

To that end we will be listening to, and taking our lead from the likes of Spirit of Shankly, Spion Kop 1906, Reclaim Our Game, The FSA and supporter collectives from across the pyramid.

This week has shown us that when we move as one, we move with the power to change football, and the world, for the better.

This isn’t over and we will use our voice and the platform that you have afforded us to achieve our collective goals.

UNITY IS STRENGTH.

The Kop Chronicles

The Kop Chronicles is a series aiming to remember, inform and celebrate. The likes of Jamie Carragher, Bruce Grobbelaar, Alan Kennedy, Ian Callaghan, Paul Dalglish, Dominic Matteo, Dave Kirby, Peter Hooton, Jeff Goulding, Ian Byrne & John Machin all share their memories of players who shaped the landscape of LFC and the games which added to our renowned history throughout the footballing world.

Kenny Dalglish | The Kop Chronicles | Episode One

Kenny Dalglish is a Liverpool legend. Up there with the likes of John Houlding, Bill Shankly & Billy Liddell for his contributions to this club. In Episode One of The Kop Chronicles, we look at the career of the man who has spent near enough 44 years playing, managing and guiding Liverpool FC – creating the ‘Bastion of Invincibility’ throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, that Bill Shankly sought after, all those years ago.

Steve Heighway | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Two

Steve Heighway is one of, if not the biggest unsung Heroes in Liverpool FC’s history. In Episode Two of The Kop Chronicles, we explore the life of a man who brought success on the pitch – by transforming in the winger position for Liverpool, and also off the pitch – by nurturing the likes of Gerrard, Owen, Fowler and Carragher, who furthered our success and added to the storied history that we know and love for Liverpool FC.

Ian Callaghan | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Three

Ian Callaghan is the embodiment of going from the Shankly Era to the pinnacle of football. In Episode Three of The Kop Chronicles, we look at a man who helped lay the foundation of the historic club we have today, and also reaped the rewards at our peak with his 857 appearances throughout the 60s and 70s.

Alan Kennedy | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Four

Alan Kennedy has given Liverpool 2 of their 6 European Cups – the most prestigious and notoriously elusive titles in club football.. In Episode Four of The Kop Chronicles we remember one of the most successful left-backs of all time, in one of the best defences and teams the world has ever seen.

Kevin Keegan | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Five

Kevin Keegan was Liverpool’s first world-renowned superstar, who’s persona could be argued was bigger than the club at the time. In Episode Five of The Kop Chronicles we take a look back at a player who gave 100% every time he stepped onto the pitch and could even be regarded as ahead of his time in terms of his athleticism.

Graeme Souness | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Six

Graeme Souness is arguably the best midfielder and captain that Liverpool FC have ever had, overseeing a prosperous period for the club. In Episode Six of The Kop Chronicles we recount the stories of a hard-man footballer with a cultured side to his game, controlling matches and imposing his will on the opposition to win everything there is on offer in club football and then came back to have a less than stellar time as manager in the early 90s.

Cash Out Explained: Why Pressing the Button on a Liverpool Game Is Harder Than It Looks

Cash Out Explained: Why Pressing the Button on a Liverpool Game Is Harder Than It Looks

There is a specific kind of dread that Liverpool supporters know better than most. It is 70 minutes, the Reds are a goal up, the game has been comfortable enough, and then something shifts. A sloppy pass. A booking. The opposition manager throwing on two strikers. And there in the corner of your app is a number, offering to end the whole thing right now.

Every fanbase gets this. Ours gets it worse, and for a reason that is worth unpacking properly, because the reason cuts both ways.

First, what that number actually is

Cash out is not the bookmaker doing you a favour. It is a second bet, and they are on the other side of it.

Say you backed Liverpool at 5/2 away from home before kick off, twenty quid on it, so a win returns £70. Seventy minutes gone, one nil up, and the in play market now has Liverpool at around 1/4 to see it out. That price implies roughly an 80 percent chance.

Do the sum yourself. £70 multiplied by 0.80 is £56. That is roughly what your bet is worth at that exact moment, in cold probability terms.

Check the app and it is offering £49.

The £7 gap is the cash out margin. You are being asked to swap an uncertain £70 for a certain £49, and you are paying around 12 percent of the bet’s real value for the privilege of not having to watch the last twenty minutes properly.

That margin is not fixed. It moves depending on the book, the market and how much risk they fancy shifting. It gets noticeably wider on accumulators, on correct score, and on anything with several outcomes still live. If you have got a Saturday multi with Liverpool as the last leg, the number you are being shown is usually further from fair value than you think, precisely because it looks like such a big return compared to your stake.

The Liverpool problem

Here is where it gets interesting for this fanbase specifically.

Liverpool have spent the better part of two decades building a reputation as a club that scores late and refuses to die. Istanbul in 2005 is the obvious one, three down at half time to Milan and level within six minutes of the restart. The 4-0 against Barcelona at Anfield in 2019 is the other, a tie that every model on earth had as gone. And beyond the famous nights there has been a steady drip of 89th minute winners at the Kop end that have shaped how supporters feel about the closing stages of a football match.

Worth noting that cash out did not exist in 2005. It arrived on betting exchanges and then sportsbooks around 2011 and 2012. Nobody watching in the Atatürk had the option, which is probably for the best given what the half time offer would have looked like.

That history creates two opposite instincts, and both of them cost money.

The first is the fan who cannot cash out on Liverpool because of what happened in Istanbul, holding a bet that has genuinely gone bad on the basis that this club does comebacks. The second is the fan who cashes out every single time Liverpool are ahead, because they have watched enough late collapses to expect one.

Neither instinct is analysis. They are both memory, and memory in football is heavily weighted toward the dramatic.

The market already knows about all this

This is the part most people miss. The in play price on a Liverpool game is not naive about who is playing. If a squad genuinely converts more late winning positions than average, or concedes more late equalisers than average, that shows up in the model and it is already inside the number you are being offered.

You do not get an edge by knowing Liverpool score late goals. Everyone knows Liverpool score late goals, including the people setting the price.

What you can occasionally know better than the model is context. A defender who is visibly struggling and has already been booked. A substitution that has changed the shape in a way the numbers have not caught up with. A game state where Liverpool have stopped pressing and dropped ten yards deeper than they should have. If you are watching properly and you spot something real, that is a legitimate reason to take the money. Wanting the anxiety to stop is not.

The asymmetry that quietly drains your account

Think about when you actually use cash out. Only ever on bets that are currently winning.

Nobody has ever been offered a partial refund on a bet that died in the fifteenth minute at Old Trafford. So across a season, your losers lose in full and your winners get shaved by 8 or 10 percent each time. That is the whole mechanism, and it is enough to turn a small edge into no edge and no edge into a steady leak.

If you cash out habitually rather than selectively, you are not managing risk. You are paying a subscription fee to avoid the last twenty minutes.

The stream delay problem

Worth flagging for anyone following from outside the UK, which is a decent chunk of this audience. If you are watching on a stream you are behind, sometimes by well over a minute.

Cash out prices are built off live data from the ground and update almost instantly. So if the offer suddenly moves hard against you, something has probably already happened that you have not seen yet. The button gets suspended around goals and big incidents for exactly that reason. You are never going to beat the market to information on a delayed feed, so do not try.

Partial cash out is the sensible middle

If you take one practical thing from this, make it this. Partial cash out lets you pull half the position and let the rest run, which means you pay the margin on half the bet rather than all of it and you keep some upside if Liverpool see it out.

Auto cash out is worth a look too, not because the price is better but because you set it when you are calm rather than at 88 minutes with your heart going. If you know you are prone to nervy exits, making the decision on a Thursday is better than making it in the moment. The short version

At 70 minutes with Liverpool ahead, the app is offering you slightly less than your bet is worth in exchange for taking the ending away. Sometimes that trade makes sense, usually when your read on the game has genuinely changed. Sometimes it is just nerves wearing the costume of strategy.

Knowing which one you are doing is the entire skill, and it is worth more than any tip anyone will ever give you.

Only bet what you can afford to lose, and if it stops being fun, take a break from it.
