Liverpool have shown an interest in signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to a report from Steve Bates of The Mirror.

The Reds have apparently been watching the Leeds midfielder closely and Bates reports that Jurgen Klopp has been impressed with Phillips’ development over the last few years.

Tottenham are also keeping tabs on the England international who Bates says is valued at around £50m by Leeds.

Jamie Redknapp, who captained both Liverpool and Spurs in the past, recently praised Phillips, saying that he “makes football look easy” and it looks like two of Redknapp’s former clubs have been equally impressed with the midfielder as their former skipper has.

Phillips has certainly progressed well at Leeds under the tutorage of Marcelo Bielsa and was rewarded for his development by Gareth Southgate, who called the midfielder up to the national team.

Whether Liverpool would be willing to spend around £50m on him remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world if they were in the market for another midfielder.

Gini Wijnaldum will be out of contract in the summer and James Milner’s career is also in its twilight, so Klopp might want another option, but that is unlikely to be a defensive midfielder, which Phillips is.

At £50m, it’s difficult for us to see this being a move that Liverpool pursue but we’ll keep tabs on it just in case.
