The Redmen TV…….an open letter

An open letter to the viewers and subscribers of Redmen TV regarding the break up of the Super League, ownership of Liverpool Football Club and the future of football…. We along with many other outlets have been covering the outrageous European Super League news this week. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during this time. We’ve felt emboldened and invigorated by the togetherness of football fans around the world and we will continue to fight for what we believe is right. The shut down of the Super League is a battle which has been won but the fight for a football that we believe in has only just begun. We wholeheartedly stand for reforms in football. These reforms need to address a myriad of issues including the distribution of money down the whole football pyramid. Racism in football needs addressing and inequality in all its forms. There needs to be, in our opinion, fan representation on the board of every club in the land. Fairer ticket prices, greater consideration on kick off times and ease of access to tickets for young fans must be factored in. We also need to urgently address the new Champions League format, proposals for an expanded Club World Cup, and the knock on impact on our domestic cup competitions. Hopefully, and perhaps most importantly, we believe in exploring and pursuing something similar to the German 50+1 fan ownership rule. This list is by no means exhaustive and I’m sure there are countless things that are important to us all. With regards to the ownership of Liverpool FC, and the next steps, there will of course be a difference of opinion amongst the Liverpool fan base, but now is not the time to turn on each other. There is a collective feeling that football needs to change and this can be achieved if we all stand together. To that end we will be listening to, and taking our lead from the likes of Spirit of Shankly, Spion Kop 1906, Reclaim Our Game, The FSA and supporter collectives from across the pyramid. This week has shown us that when we move as one, we move with the power to change football, and the world, for the better. This isn’t over and we will use our voice and the platform that you have afforded us to achieve our collective goals. UNITY IS STRENGTH. Paul, Chris, Tom, Simon, Ben, Ross REDMEN TV YNWA

The Kop Chronicles | Episodes 1-6

The Kop Chronicles is a series aiming to remember, inform and celebrate. The likes of Jamie Carragher, Bruce Grobbelaar, Alan Kennedy, Ian Callaghan, Paul Dalglish, Dominic Matteo, Dave Kirby, Peter Hooton, Jeff Goulding, Ian Byrne & John Machin all share their memories of players who shaped the landscape of LFC and the games which added to our renowned history throughout the footballing world.

Kenny Dalglish | The Kop Chronicles | Episode One

Kenny Dalglish is a Liverpool legend. Up there with the likes of John Houlding, Bill Shankly & Billy Liddell for his contributions to this club. In Episode One of The Kop Chronicles, we look at the career of the man who has spent near enough 44 years playing, managing and guiding Liverpool FC – creating the ‘Bastion of Invincibility’ throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, that Bill Shankly sought after, all those years ago.

Steve Heighway | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Two

Steve Heighway is one of, if not the biggest unsung Heroes in Liverpool FC’s history. In Episode Two of The Kop Chronicles, we explore the life of a man who brought success on the pitch – by transforming in the winger position for Liverpool, and also off the pitch – by nurturing the likes of Gerrard, Owen, Fowler and Carragher, who furthered our success and added to the storied history that we know and love for Liverpool FC.

Ian Callaghan | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Three

Ian Callaghan is the embodiment of going from the Shankly Era to the pinnacle of football. In Episode Three of The Kop Chronicles, we look at a man who helped lay the foundation of the historic club we have today, and also reaped the rewards at our peak with his 857 appearances throughout the 60s and 70s.

Alan Kennedy | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Four

Alan Kennedy has given Liverpool 2 of their 6 European Cups – the most prestigious and notoriously elusive titles in club football.. In Episode Four of The Kop Chronicles we remember one of the most successful left-backs of all time, in one of the best defences and teams the world has ever seen.

Kevin Keegan | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Five

Kevin Keegan was Liverpool’s first world-renowned superstar, who’s persona could be argued was bigger than the club at the time. In Episode Five of The Kop Chronicles we take a look back at a player who gave 100% every time he stepped onto the pitch and could even be regarded as ahead of his time in terms of his athleticism.

Graeme Souness | The Kop Chronicles | Episode Six

Graeme Souness is arguably the best midfielder and captain that Liverpool FC have ever had, overseeing a prosperous period for the club. In Episode Six of The Kop Chronicles we recount the stories of a hard-man footballer with a cultured side to his game, controlling matches and imposing his will on the opposition to win everything there is on offer in club football and then came back to have a less than stellar time as manager in the early 90s.

Latest: Marcos Leonardo to Liverpool

Written by Lewis Thompson

With Mane, Origi and Minamino having all officially departed Liverpool Football Club on permanent transfers, between them leaving behind 49 goal contributions last season, there leaves a question, will they all be replaced and who will fill the attacking gap left behind?

So far we have seen the additions of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz to bolster our attacking front three and directly replace those who have left. The signing of Diaz has already been a massive success as the ex-Porto winger has started in a Champions League final, FA Cup final and Carabao Cup final since signing for the club in January. The addition of Nunez on top of Diaz will add a different style of threat and look to replace the goals that Mane will no longer provide. The signing of 19-year-old attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho must also be noted as he will look to come in and show off his play-making talents and high-pressing features that any Liverpool player must contain. Nunez being 23, Diaz 25 and Carvalho only 19 shows that we are building for a long-term future with these players.

Football clubs are constantly changing and adapting to suit different play styles, managers and all in all to keep up with how the modern game is changing. Liverpool’s new sporting director Julian Ward, who replaced Michael Edwards, has been tasked with finding the new wave of Liverpool’s attacking players and so far this summer he has been successful with the names previously mentioned. That being said, The Reds could still have space for another attacker to provide competition to those who are looking to be the first-choice option next season.

Recently, a brand new Brexit point system has been introduced for transfers in the Premier League. This makes it easier for English clubs to secure work permits for players signing from abroad. South American players, particularly from Brazil and Argentina are much easier to attain and bring to the Premier League than they were before.

Here’s some quick information to describe how the points system works. The FA describe points being scored for senior and talented young players based on:

  • “Senior and youth international appearances.”
  • “Quality of the selling club, based on the league they are in, league position and progression in continental competition.”
  • “Club appearances, based on domestic league and continental competition minutes”

[thefa.com]

Earlier this year, Manchester City secured the signature of 22-year-old Argentinian striker Julian Alvarez, an exciting hot prospect who looks to have the whole world at his feet. When looking for another attacker, Ward may have to use similar tactics to City and explore the South American region to find the next big thing.

It is known that Liverpool scout the South American region extensively and they were already aware of the likes of Diaz and Nunez as teenagers, before their moves to Europe.

In the future, to save money, the club could look at going straight to South America to make their purchases before waiting for the retrospective talents to make a move to Europe first. Ward could start with this new approach right away and this is where I introduce to you the 19-year-old, Brazilian, Santos forward, Marcos Leonardo.

According to Brazilian TV presenter, Milton Neves, the forward is already ‘on his way’ to Anfield, following his comments after Santos drew with Corinthians on Saturday. [sportwitness.co.uk].

Neves said, Corinthians yesterday escaped being defeated by the Santos kids. Marcos Leonardo, who’s going to Liverpool, this guy is the new Romário!”

Now, obviously these comments are to be taken with a pinch of salt and this is a slight exaggeration as others around him did laugh at the comments, however, the move to Liverpool was not dismissed. Leonardo is known as one of the most exciting talents on the continent, along with now Man City player Alvarez. He is expected to be the next big talent that Santos produce, having previously created some of football’s biggest names, Neymar and Pele.

Ben Bocsak describes Marcos Leonardo as “unsurprisingly a player full of flair and eye-catching flamboyance” and compares him like-for-like to Bobby Firmino at Liverpool whilst also having similar explosive qualities to Luis Suarez in his prime. [liverpool.com]

Standing at 5 foot 7, Leonardo is a right-footed centre-forward who can also play as a second striker just in behind. This season Leonardo has produced 12 goals and 3 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Since joining Santos FC in July 2020 from the Under 20 squad, he has scored 15 goals in 46 appearances in the Brasileiro Serie A (the Brazilian first division) and in total has 25 goals and 4 assists in 94 professional appearances across all competitions. Also, picking up 15 yellow cards along the way, so it is clear to see where the Suarez comparisons come from …

[Whoscored.com] break down some of Marcos’ main characteristics. Under his ‘strengths’ they list:

  • Through balls
  • Finishing
  • Headed attempts

And under ‘weaknesses’:

  • Passing
  • Defensive contribution

Two things that could definitely be improved under a manager like Jurgen Klopp. They also go on to describe his style of play in a few brief sentences, ‘Gets fouled often’, ‘Indirect set-piece threat’, ‘Likes to dribble’, ‘Does not dive into tackles’ and ‘Commits fouls often’ some of which go very hand-in-hand with the type of player Luis Suarez was and what a player like Firmino currently is.

In the 2021/2022 season, Marcos Leonardo has scored 12 goals in 58 shots with an expected goals rate of 11.03. This means that out of those 58 shots, he was only expected to score 11 of them and being ahead of your expected goals is always an impressive stat for a young talent.

The above graphic also shows Leonardo’s shot placement map, comparing his goals scored with his shots on target. Leonardo’s output this season has been very impressive as the forward averages 0.65 goal contributions per 90 minutes. When you compare this to the fact that Santos only average 1.28 goals per 90 in the league, it is understandably a very impressive stat. When it comes to dribbling, the number nine averages 3.08 dribbles per 90 with a 57.6 per cent success rate, relatively high numbers for a centre forward.

Marcos Leonardo is currently valued at 7 million Euros according to [transfermarkt.com] and although we do not know much about him at this current rate, he is definitely a player to keep your eye on. It would not surprise me at all if we see the Brazilian making a move to Europe or England in the very near future and he is a player that I hope Liverpool go after as there really is nothing negative to say about the young man.

Liverpool FC Pre Season: What to expect

By Brett Callwood

Manchester United vs Liverpool is a game that always matters! Until, that is, it doesn’t.

At this moment in time, the first pre-season fixture on the LFC schedule is Man Utd at the Rajamangala Stadium in Thailand, which is a little unusual. Ordinarily, we kick off with a couple of games against local lower division sides such as Tranmere, Chester or Preston. Oftentimes, some of the prime players haven’t returned from their holidays due to extended international duties or something, so we send out a young team, fringe players, and the eternally eternal James Milner.

There’s still time to announce another couple of low-key pre-season fixtures, but at the mo, United is first up. Then it’s Palace in Singapore. And so on.

We played United during the pre-season a couple of years ago, in Ann Arbor, Michigan (43 miles from Detroit). The game (4-1 to the reds) has been forgotten by most, but you might recall the fourth goal – a stunning overhead volley by Shaqiri. Those who were at the game – the US fans who rarely get a chance to see their heroes – certainly do.

But still, the game, the result, didn’t matter. It was 100 percent about getting players warmed up and in rhythm, and integrating new and youth players. This game in Thailand is no different. It’s United but the result on July 12 doesn’t matter. On the other hand, the result against the same opposition on August 20 very much does.

As the Redmen TV lads recently pointed out on the “New Era” podcast, when you’re up against Man City for the league, you have to hit the ground running. Therefore it’s inevitable that most of our attention during the friendlies is going to be focussed on how we’re going to cope without Sadio Mane, and more specifically whether Darwin Nunez will fill the gap.

But it’s worth remembering that these will be Nunez’s first minutes with new teammates. They’re not competitive minutes, so the priority is on getting to know his new colleagues. If he doesn’t score, if he plays poorly even, it’s not important. This is all about acclimatising.

The gaffer may well use the opportunities in pre-season to experiment with formations too. Why the hell wouldn’t he? So we might see the forward players, all of the players in fact, in positions they’re not generally familiar with. And so, it might initially look rusty, clunky and unattractive. But again, we shouldn’t worry about it at all. Listen to our players from the great sides of the ‘80s, people like Stevie Nicol, and you’ll hear them laugh about how they often got stuffed in pre-season.

It’ll be exciting to see Calvin Ramsey in a Liverpool shirt. Last season, there were games when we were crying out for a like-for-like replacement for Trent – a right-sided Kostas if you will. Robbo was and is the first choice left-back, but the quality didn’t dip noticeably when the Greek Scouser played and he even had that big moment in the FA Cup Final shootout. On the right, Milner and Gomez did a fine job when Trent was rested, but it still felt a bit square-peg-round-hole. Milner is a midfielder (and a damn fine one). Joey Gomez is a centre back who will hope to challenge Matip and Big Ibu this coming season. Neco Williams would appear to be heading for the exit door after a great loan spell with Fulham. So Ramsey will have opportunities, and time to bed in.

It’ll be interesting to see where Klopp plays Fabio Carvalho in pre-season. Is he going to be a creative midfielder, or a forward? Or both? The fact that we haven’t signed a(nother) midfielder, and that Keita is still with us, would suggest the former. We’ll have to see, but he’s a thrilling talent.

So what else to watch? Hopefully we’ll see Kaide Gordon on the field a lot. If Taki is indeed leaving us (as is being reported), following Divock and Sadio, then Kaide may well be “number six” in the striker rotation, and that would mean game time in the domestic cups. It’ll be interesting to follow that.

This is surely a massive season for Curtis Jones, who still hasn’t nailed down a starting position in the team but remains a popular member of the squad. A full pre-season should get Harvey Elliott firing on all cylinders again, and Kelleher will likely be playing for the first time since his League Cup Final penalty.

By the time we get to the Community Shield meeting with City (is that a pre-season friendly – you decide), we should be close to ready.

Pre-season is exciting because of what lies ahead, the potential in front of us, rather than the result in any one specific game. It’s interesting on an analytical level rather than edge-of-the-seat exciting.

But hey, footy’s footy!

Transfer Window Madness

Hello the World Wide Web, how are we?

Very much living in that weird off season cycle at the moment, bit like those few days between Christmas and New Year where you’ve no idea what day it is, what you’re supposed to be going and you’ve lost all hope of any structure of your life.

That’s right ladies and gentleman, welcome to the silly season. The season of link after link, quote after quote, lots of copy and paste jobs [@source] and above all, loads of bullshit.

It might be an age thing, possibly even a generational thing, pretty sure they are the same, but I cannot fathom how invested people get into transfers, or shockingly, how angry people can get over something they have no control over or something which they didn’t have in their lives before.

Like I said, it could be an age thing. I’m 32, I grew up reading stories (bullshit) in newspapers and naively, I believed it at the time. Now we’re seeing a supersized version of that, bullshit on steroids. Mega-bullshit if you will. And like me when I was younger, I’m now seeing people falling for the same tripe day after day.

‘Liverpool are interested in X player’

And? What does that mean?!

Well not a lot.

I’m interested in Margot Robbie pal, doesn’t mean anything.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out the transfer bullshit algorithm. Simply look at a team, have a look where they might strengthen and then link a good player in that position. If that fails just recycle the Salah contract situation, that’ll get clicks without any updates.

So why do people get so invested?

Listen, I’m not captain miserable. Although people who know me may disagree.

We all love a new signing, a rejuvenation of our squad, something to get us all excited and something which shows we’re happy to strengthen and evolve. Darwin pun not intentional.

Some of us just like to wade through all the bullshit. Can’t be arsed with the ‘will we, won’t we’ for days, weeks and months on end.

That’s partly why I like most of Liverpool’s business; linked with a player from reputable sources in the morning, news of a medical and everything else being done in the afternoon and signed within the next few days.

Of course we at Redmen TV and you guys at home like the discussion of players too, I can’t tell you how much I spoke about Timo Werner; where will he fit in, what can we expect etc…only for him not to sign. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Life can be unfair, you don’t always get what you want and I’m perfectly fine with that.

And I’m guilty of doing this on our social channels too. If Liverpool have a strong link with a player, I’ll ask you for your opinion, that’s part and parcel of my job. And the majority of replies are sensible and something I can have a discussion with. Others not so much.

Did I want Aurélien Tchouaméni? Yep.

Am I going to lose my mind and be angry at people on the internet I don’t know? Nah you’re alright thanks.

That’s something else I don’t think I’ll ever get my head around. How can supporters of the same club continually argue, abuse and fallout with each other over something like a transfer? And that’s not just a Liverpool thing by the way, I’m sure it happens with most football clubs, possibly non football entities too.

I partly know the answer to this. Social media is full of people who haven’t grasped the concept of being sociable. Madness.

For Liverpool fans, we all want the same thing, we want our club to be successful, the best, to win everything that is possible. Just because we have different ideas of how we get there doesn’t mean any scenario is wrong. Let me play this out in two scenarios and let me know which one you think is better.

Scenario 1

Person 1: “I think Curtis Jones will improve this season and I look forward to seeing him get some more game time, however, if there was a chance at also bringing in a quality midfielder I’d be happy with that too.”

Person 2 “Fair enough, I’m not sure he’ll cut it at the club, I think we should go all out this summer for a quality midfielder.”

Scenario 2

Person 1 “I quite like Curtis Jones, I think he’s got some potential.”

Person 2 “You’re settling for mediocrity, he’s shite. Bin him off. We need to spend.”

We can all agree to disagree can’t we?

I’m aware I’m not going to solve football Twitter here, nor do I intend to unite top and bottom reds, whatever the fuck they are.

Same goes for the people that use the term ‘Horrenderson’ – Just say you don’t like him or you aren’t a fan, it’s not difficult. Can’t interact with those people.

The point being, Liverpool may or may not do business and I get some people live for it, but it cannot be healthy to be so invested in it. As mentioned, those people who live for it want Liverpool to improve and do well, get that. There’s probably a fear there too. “Man City have bought someone, we must buy someone too” – all be it, they did buy a class player in Haaland but sod City and their business, stick with us and what we do.

“If we don’t buy X then then season is over before it’s begun”

Well, that’s bollocks isn’t it? You don’t know that. And that’s not a conversation. Maybe a should come up with a list of alternative conversations for people to try.

Instead of “If we don’t buy X then then season is over before it’s begun” why not try “I’m not so confident we’ll win the league if we don’t sign X but I respect your opinion.”

Instead of “He’s shite, sell him” why not try “I don’t think he’s good enough, I think we could sell him and reinvest the money.”

Instead of coming up with a list of player OUTS and how much you think we will sell them for along a list of INS of how much you think they will cost like you’ve any fucking idea how any of that works and that you can solve the transfer business of a football club, just don’t.

Instead of replying to every Liverpool post cryarsing about a signing, move on with your life. Get outside, talk to a human.

Again, that’s not to say it’s forbidden to talk about a player or that nothing is up for discussion. Maybe I am just being a miserable arse, I just see so much shite day in, day out. I see the people obsessing over a rumour, a link and you guessed it, bullshit and it gets quite tiresome to be honest.

And if you do love a link, rumour or a transfer, this isn’t a criticism of you, so don’t take it personally. It’s just my thoughts. I’m here for the football, I’m here for the fun, the escapism and everything that comes with it.

This should work both ways, fans shouldn’t be criticised for wanting a signing nor should they have the “it’s not football manager” chat rammed down their throats at every chance. Depending on the chat, I know there are some WILD opinions out there.

But again, it comes back to how the conversation is approached and if someone says something you really don’t agree with, just move on, you’ll feel so much better. Promise.

There’s far too many people who follow football who, for me, look like they just don’t enjoy any of it.

Best piece of advice I could give you is to stop watching Sky Sports News 24/7, who also report transfer news and rumours, just because “they said on SSN” doesn’t make it true, they are citing it from somewhere else.

Stop refreshing social media day in day out, you doing so won’t change the outcome of a transfer.

People have zero patience when it comes to transfers, who I bet haven’t even got this far in the article ironically.

Take the off season to relax and enjoy yourself, the season is long and hard enough. *THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID MEME*

If you’ve got this far, then thanks for reading me moan. Just wanted to get it off my chest to be honest.

Be nice to each other.
