Liverpool U18s 0-3 Reading U18s: Match Report & Marc Bridge-Wilkinson

By Mark Strickland

Liverpool U18s lost their Premier League Cup home semi-final 3-0 to Reading at The Academy in Kirby on Tuesday afternoon.

George Booth, Emmanuel Osho and Kiyan Coke Miles-Smith scored the three second-half goals for the visitors who will face West Ham United in the final.

The Reds failed to register an attempt on target, which will disappoint manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson as their progress in the competition was a welcome distraction from a difficult league campaign.

After 15 minutes, Josh Sonni-Lambie and Rio Ngumoha had the first two opportunities, both cutting inside the 18-yard area and both seeing their shots blocked.

The Redmen TV are proudly partnered with Dr. Emrah Cinik

In the 33rd minute, Sonni-Lambie collected the ball midway through the attacking half and drove forward, but he dragged his effort low and wide.

Two minutes later, after two mis-clearances, Osho curled the ball with little backlift, and it came off the crossbar kindly for Reds goalkeeper Kornel Miscuir.

Booth put Reading in front on the hour mark via a deflection after Alvin Ayman tried a turn and Kareem Ahmed was not strong enough.

Osho doubled the visitors’ lead, finding the top corner, and Coke Miles-Smith won a penalty against Amara Nallo, which he rolled into the left corner.

Despite finishing the stronger The Reds struggled to carve out anything like a clear cut chance and in the end were comfortable beaten on a frustrating afternoon.

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson

His assessment: “It was a tough game. In the second half, the game seemed to fall away from us and we were struggling a bit to get hold of the game again. First things first, fair play to Reading. I thought they thoroughly deserved the win. I thought they were the better team and created chances. We didn’t create an awful lot today. It was a disappointing second half, but we move forward.”

On conceding a second so soon after the first: “I don’t think anyone wants to go a goal down and then two quickly, so it’s just about recognising the moments in the game and recognising what you need to do. I think sometimes we create our own problems. I think when moments are going against you, you’ve got to find a way not to make mistakes that will cost you.”

On the lack of chances his team created: “I think in the first half we played slowly. I don’t think we got the moments on the sides of the pitch that we set out to achieve. I think the space was there, the moments were there for us to use, but we didn’t use them. We didn’t get there quick enough. I think sometimes when things go against you, it’s really tough for these young players and in today’s situation, conceding two quick goals knocked the wind out of us a little bit. It took us a while to get back into it and the third goal seals the deal, so it’s disappointing. We didn’t create anywhere near as much as we wanted and we’ve conceded three goals which is never good.”

On the performance of the team: “I think whichever team you put out, I think we go out there and everyone tries to win and perform. I don’t think we could single anybody out and say they didn’t do what we expected. I just don’t think it was a particularly great day all around.”

“I would imagine some of them are frustrated. I think the important thing is I think sometimes we have to recognise it’s not all about us as individuals, it’s about the team. And if the team are playing in the way that the left side allows the right side to play and vice versa, if the back allows the front to play, and the front presses and allows the back to press and come with them, then it makes the game a lot easier. I think today was a little bit fractious in places and a little bit off it, but that’s what happens when you put players back into groups that have not always been.”

On Alvin Ayman: “He is a wonderful boy. The first thing you’ve got to say is he is a great lad. He wants to learn. He wants to do well. He is full of energy and enthusiasm. And I think today he showed moments of what we know he can do. I think there is more to come from him. I think in time we will see the best version.”

On responding to the setbacks: “We’ll go through. We’ll watch the game back. We’ll debrief it with the players that are around. Ultimately, it’s about sometimes just rolling your sleeves up and doing the side of the game that perhaps isn’t the side of the game that you want to do. Sometimes you have to put your body on the line and you have to make blocks and headers and tackles, and that’s the side of the game that in a particular moment of the game you have to do. You have to do it well. We’ll look back. We’ll go through it. We’ll pick out parts where we know we can improve. We’ll use it as a development and learning moment. And hopefully, you’ll look at it and not do that again and then it’s a lesson learnt.”

On Carter Pinnington: “He won headers and blocks. I thought he and Nallo for a period of time looked quite comfortable and quite strong and then as the game went on it became a little bit more difficult. I thought he was quite pleasing through the game.”

Liverpool Execute The Perfect Smash-and-Grab In Paris

By Aiden Gharibian

Liverpool Execute the Perfect Smash-and-Grab in Paris

The game ends 1–0 in favour of the Reds at the Parc des Princes, but the scoreline doesn’t quite tell the full story. Paris Saint-Germain dominated possession with 70% and registered 1.82 xG from 27 total shots, 10 of which were on target. Despite their control, PSG failed to break through Liverpool’s resilient defence. So, what stopped them from getting a result?

The Redmen TV are proudly partnered with Dr. Emrah Cinik

The simple answer is Alisson Becker. PSG were relentless in attack today and delivered a midfield masterclass against arguably the best midfield unit in world football. There were also a few heart-in-mouth moments for Liverpool today, including the potential red card check for Ibrahima Konate and the marginally offside goal of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. With so much difficulty in containing the Parisians, Liverpool have Alisson Becker to thank for somehow keeping a clean sheet. The Brazilian made 9 saves and prevented a staggering 2.26 expected goals. While Alisson was the man of the match, the subs did a wonderful job of snatching the win. Two substitutes Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott combined in the 87th minute to complete the smash-and-grab victory, with Gianluigi Donnarumma possibly feeling he could’ve done better to save Elliott’s strike. With all this said and done, what does this mean for the Reds going forward?

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

Liverpool were less than convincing, but a 1–0 win away from home is a brilliant result to take back home to Anfield. PSG now need to beat The Reds by at least two goals at Anfield — a result Liverpool fans will feel confident won’t happen, given their incredible home atmosphere. If they go through, Liverpool look set to face Aston Villa in the quarter-finals, setting the stage for a high-stakes Premier League showdown.

Exclusive: “Super Aggressive.” – Julien Laurens On PSG Approach Ahead Of Liverpool UCL Clash

By Leah Bower

With both teams sitting 13 points clear of their domestic leagues, Paris Saint-Germain host Liverpool for the first leg of the round of 16 on Wednesday night in what is set to be one of the biggest clashes of the season.

‘It could have very well been a Champions League final’ said PSG boss, Luis Enrique, as the Reds and the Paris side are in incredible form.

PSG’s only losses this season have come from the Champions League, something the Reds will hope to capitalise on.

Dan spoke to French football journalist, Julien Laurens, about PSG’s form this season, what Slot’s team can expect, and his predictions over the two legs.

The Redmen TV are proudly partnered with Dr. Emrah Cinik

On PSG’s form this season:

“This is the best football they’ve played under Luis Enrique since he arrived 18 months ago at the club.

“I think the turning point might be that win against [Manchester] City in the league phase … they haven’t looked back since that City win.

“This is really the start of the project. Now there’s no more Mbappé, no Messi, no Neymar, which is what Luis Enrique wanted.

“He’s always said this team is going to be better as a team, certainly without all those superstars, and I think he’s right now.

“A lot of people have said to me recently, ‘Oh, I hated your team for a long time, but now it’s fun watching them’, which is a win in itself.”

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

On the Champions League:

“This is not a team that can win the Champions League this season.

“They seem to be ahead of schedule really because of how they’re playing right now.

“Are they ready to be able to compete over two games with a team like Liverpool? We’ll have the answer now, but they might just not be ready yet.”

Against Liverpool:

“[Enrique] said we won’t be scared… they really want to enjoy those two games.

“If Liverpool are better, Liverpool are better. There’s no shame in being knocked out by Liverpool, the best team in Europe right now.

“[PSG’s] game is being super aggressive.”

On what to watch out for:

“When we talk about the team that should start on Wednesday, there will be a couple of question marks over who Luis Enrique goes for in midfield and upfront.

“I think Vitinha is literally the one that makes this team click and that everything goes through him.

“I think at some point he would be so good – that even as much as I would love him to stay forever at PSG, he can go to a better club like Liverpool without a doubt.

“To face Trent and Robertson, which I think is where PSG can hurt Liverpool, it has to be Barcola and Dembélé, or if Dembélé plays central, then Doué or Kvaratskhelia.

“Another key area, of course, like a Barcola-Alexander-Arnold kind of match-up, the match-up between Nuno Mendes and Salah.

“I would not say that Nuno Mendes’ best attribute is his defending. He’s a bit like Trent, he’s so good going forward, he’s super quick, he’s quite physical, but in one-on-one situations, at times, he struggles a bit.

“Salah coming to his left foot, so inside, could be a bit of a problem, I think, for Nuno.”

On what Liverpool could exploit:

“Balls over the top, runs from Szoboszlai from deep, runs from Luis Diaz again, in behind, that is to be expected.

“Donnarumma and PSG are not the best on set pieces.

“Expect a high press, like a man-to-man press straight away.

“That’s why it’ll be so much fun, I think, because there are two attacking sides that go for it, really.”

On the atmosphere:

“Even the ultras now prefer this team to the team with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe. Even with how great that looked on paper, it was not that much fun because everybody knew how unbalanced the team was and how fractured the team was.

“There were those three up front, and then there were the rest of the team.

“The atmosphere is even better at the stadium than I think it was for a very long time because everybody’s on board.

“I mean, I don’t mean this is better than Anfield on a great night, I’m just saying that the flares, the banners, the tifos, the constant singing from all sides of the stadium, it’s just going to be great again on Wednesday.

“There will be 3,000 Liverpool fans there who will make noise of their own, of course. Just expect a wonderful atmosphere with colours and sound and singing all the time.”

Predictions:

“I think you could even make PSG maybe slightly favourable for the first legs only, to take an advantage in this game. You know, you could see them winning 2-1, 3-2, something like that.

“I think over the two legs, as much as you know, my heart obviously bleeds PSG, I would want us to go through. I do wonder if this is just a little bit too early for this PSG team.

“I think physically the one that falters the first might pay for it at some point. So, it’ll be fascinating.

“I would go for a Liverpool 5-4 win in aggregate over the two legs.”

Redmen Reacts

A 5-4 scoreline is honestly quite a realistic outcome of this tie. With both teams prolific in their pressing and goalscoring but potentially weak in their fullback’s defensive abilities, there are bound to be goals coming from all over the place.

Dembélé is an obvious concern and the threat from their wingers should be ringing alarm bells at the AXA.

Hopefully a fully fit Gravenberch, Macallister and Szoboszlai can contain the danger of Vitinha in the midfield and be able to minimise his vital impact to this PSG side.

The likes of Virgil and Konate could offer the Reds some defensive stability and the amount of our goals could depend on our entire front 3 showing up, but this could easily be one of the most exciting games we’ve seen so far under Slot.

PSG v Liverpool: Match Preview

By Leah Bower

Two of the most in form teams in Europe are to clash heads as Paris Saint-Germain host Liverpool at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Alike in their prolific goal scorers, pressing ability, and dominance, this tie should be one of the spectacles of the season, with PSG manager, Luis Enrique, saying ‘it could have been a Champions League final’.

With the Reds flying at the top of the Premier League table, their focus now shifts to dominating Europe’s biggest stage against arguably the other most in form team.

PSG have been in an incredible run of form. They are 22 games unbeaten since their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on 26th November 2024. On top of that, they are in fact unbeaten in Ligue 1 so far this season and currently on a 10 game win streak.

Despite this impressive recent form, their start to the Champions league since the departure of their star man, Kylian Mbappe, was tenuous – losing 3 of their first 4 matches meaning they finished 15th in the Champions League table.

These early faults and their now incredible form has meant that they now have to face Liverpool, league table winners, in the round of 16.

The Redmen TV are proudly partnered with Dr. Emrah Cinik

Tactics

Their tactics have changed immensely over this season. Switching from a 4-3-3 to a 3-2-5 when in possession, they’ve put most of their focus on the wingers and fullbacks utilising that wide diamond.

They rank second only to Real Madrid across Europes top leagues in their use of switch of play due to their positional fluidity in order to draw the opposition out of shape and exploiting the

Their pressing intensity would rank the highest in the Premier League, winning 6.5 duels, tackles and interceptions per minute of opponent possession – Liverpool are ranked 3rd in the Premier league with 5.9.

Since finding this run of form, the stats would show that they are arguably better all round without Kylian Mbappe as their goalscorers are now much more distributed throughout the team, with Mbappe scoring 35% of the goals last season, now with Ousmane Dembele having 25% of the share of goals despite his phenomenal form – which is what Luis Enrique hoped for.

“Rather than having a player who scores 40 goals, I wanted players who all score a lot.” – Goal.com

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

Battles to watch

Virgil Van Dijk v Dembélé
With 18 goals in Ligue 1 and 6 in the Champions League, Dembélé is the obvious goal threat for the Paris side. Since Mbappe, Luis Enrique has relied heavily on the Frenchman, now deploying him centrally in a 9 position. He’s scored 10 goals in his last 7 appearances – more than any other player in Europe’s top 5 leagues. Up against the colossus that is Van Dijk alongside Konaté, and also facing a suspension if he receives a booking, it wont be easy for Dembélé to break down that brick wall, but the stats support that he may well sneak in one or two.

Alexander-Arnold & Robertson v Wingers
The Red’s fullbacks have had their fill of scrutiny in the last few months, with Trent’s defensive efforts elusive and age perhaps creeping into the legs of Robbo, but they will have to be on their absolute best form against PSG’s wingers who are essential to the Paris sides lethal attack.

The likes of Doué, Barcola and Kvaratskhelia will be the options of threat on the wing for PSG, with Dembélé and Gonçalo Ramos often being a nuisance in those areas as well.

The success of the wingers undoubtedly comes from their progression from the back line that PSG perfected against Manchester City earlier this year, in which they played a flatter line in the midfield, creating the triangles to spread the opposition fullbacks in order to make the runs in behind.

When at their best, they have been the best fullbacks in the world – but with the queries over Trent and Robertson’s consistency as of late, it’s an area of concern for sure for the Reds.

Salah v Mendes
Salah is undoubtedly the Red’s best player this season so Nuno Mendes will have to put in the performance of a lifetime to limit Mo’s input to the game. With 11 goals conceded this season, he does well in his recoveries and regaining possession, but he does pose a threat on the attack. We could possibly see Mendes tuck into a back 3 whilst PSG keep possession, but the option of him being further up the pitch may be too tempting. Salah’s inevitability may hopefully limit Mendes’ key passes through our midfield but it is certainly a key battle to watch. As Salah revealed earlier in the week, ‘one chance and [the defenders] will pay for it’.

Thoughts

The PSG boss has admitted that Liverpool are the ‘best team in Europe’, however he also likened the Reds to Lille, whom they beat convincingly last Saturday 4-1.

Enrique said, ‘We’re not going to change much, [Saturday] was a test, Liverpool and Lille have similar things, we put them under such pressure that they could no longer play from the back, they had to play long.’

Arne Slot stated the Reds are not afraid of PSG, but is ‘impressed by their quality.’ He added, ‘they are on an upwards curve a bit similar to ours at the moment’.

Liverpool have faced PSG only 4 times over the course of their history. With 2 wins each, both at home, PSG only come out on top with goal difference, scoring 7 to Liverpools 6, but it is the legendary James Milner who holds the golden boot in this fixture having scored a penalty in both legs in the 2018/19 Champions League group stages.

These next two legs will quite possibly be the most difficult fixtures both team will have to face en route to the final, but it will surely be the most entertaining.

Liverpool U21s 0-1 Middlesbrough U21s: Match Report & Barry Lewtas

By Dan Clubbe

It was a wholly frustrating afternoon at the AXA for Liverpool’s Under 21s as a strong Reds’ side were beaten by a resilient Middlesbrough outfit despite dominating almost the entire contest.

The likes of James McConnell, Trey Nyoni and Harvey Davies all featured for Barry Lewtas’ side, however, it was to be a story of collective wastefulness that would steal the show

Liverpool now sit 11th in Premier League 2 with a home clash against West Ham United up next.

The Redmen TV are proudly partnered with Dr. Emrah Cinik

Following an even start it was Liverpool who started to force their way into the ascendency with McConnell finding Trent Kone-Doherty in behind with a delightful chipped pass, only for the young winger’s effort to be parried behind for a corner.

Further chances came for Ranel Young and Rio Ngumoha before the sucker punch to top all sucker punches arrived as captain Amara Nallo inadvertently diverted a header beyond Davies when trying to clear.

The Reds responded well to the setback and Kieran Morrison tested Shea Connor from range as the half-time whistle arrived with Lewtas’ side trailing at the 45-minute mark.

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

A stop-start second half eventually saw Liverpool wrestle complete control once again and it was only the brilliance of an inspired Connor on multiple occasions that denied the hosts that elusive equaliser.

A Nallo header clipped the crossbar late on before a Morrison once again found a red shirt inside the area, this time Keyrol Figueroa nodding over with the last action of the contest, when your luck’s out, your luck is out and it certainly was for the mini-Reds despite the best efforts of the attacking prowess available.

Barry Lewtas

On the performance: “That maybe sums up us this season. Today was maybe the most frustrating. We said to the player, we’ve got to be better, we’ve got to finish the chances. Frustrating one. The reality is we’ve only got ourselves to blame.”

On how to improve in front of goal: “We created big chances inside the six-yard box, we can’t really do much more. On another day we could score four or five today, with a bit more composure.”

On Kieran Morrison playing in midfield: “Sometimes being able to be flexible and adaptable, having other strings to your bow is a good thing. We’ve seen it now at first team level, Curtis and Dom. We do want to win, but the reality is we’re here to develop players and get them ready to make that step up.”

Lewtas complimented his sides’ overall display, in particular Nyoni and McConnell who managed to dictate terms in the middle of the park despite an ultimately disappointing result.
