By Adam Brown – @AdamMNVi Luis Suarez is set to become available on a free transfer as Ronald Koeman looks to revitalise a disillusioned Barcelona side. The former Liverpool forward is one of four players who have been told to leave Camp Nou as the Barca hierarchy look to start afresh following an 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. The Reds’ interest in Timo Werner before his move to West London shows there is a genuine consideration for acquiring a forward who can lead the line at Anfield, and while Suarez is at the latter stages of his career, the Uruguayan could be a shrewd signing by Jurgen Klopp. Our poll on Twitter saw mixed responses as to whether Liverpool fans would take Suarez back – but why is there so much uncertainty? The 33-year-old’s form is yet to drop; El Pistolero recorded 21 goals and ten assists in 28 starts for Barcelona last season. There’s no question whether he can still perform – and Klopp would have a threatening number nine at his disposal when resting Roberto Firmino. Suarez would also bridge the gap between Liverpool’s best XI and bench, helping the Reds compete across multiple competitions. But things have changed since the Uruguayan left. Only Jordan Henderson remains from the last Premier League squad which the former Liverpool hitman was included in – a 2-1 win against Newcastle in 2014.

El Pistolero’s performances for Liverpool in the Premier League were some of the best many witnessed as fans; the Uruguay international would frequently terrorise teams with endless flair, contributing to 43 goals in 33 games in his final season. Norwich fans know all too well of the sort of goals which the former Liverpool number seven was capable of. But since then, the Reds have become a European juggernaut. There would no longer be a reliance on the ‘SAS’ partnership with Daniel Sturridge – Suarez would join as another cog in Klopp’s machine. As such, the striker would not be guaranteed to start every game – and would have to accept this. The Klopp mantra doesn’t allow anyone to put themselves ahead of the team, but should Suarez buy into this philosophy, the Uruguayan could be productive as Liverpool look to secure a second Premier League title in as many seasons. For as unpredictable as Suarez was on the pitch, he was just as unpredictable off it. His time at Liverpool saw the attacker caught up in multiple instances of controversy. A summer transfer window left the Nacional academy graduate in tears after John Henry rejected a £40m + £1 bid from Arsenal. Steven Gerrard persuaded the forward to not force a move away from the club, but some fans won’t forget the times when Suarez disrespected the club which stuck by him during the low moments of his Liverpool career. The Verdict Recent performances have shown that Suarez is more than capable of helping the Reds win more trophies, and, ultimately, that’s what matters. The Uruguayan would be a short-term addition which goes against FSG’s transfer strategy, but it’s something Liverpool’s owners must consider on the basis that the deal would be a free transfer. One of the biggest issues to consider is the current strength of the starting XI; the former Liverpool man will have a more reduced role than he is used to. If Klopp continues to use the preferred 4-3-3 system, where does Suarez come in? Firmino’s influence has been critical for the Reds’ success which has seen Sadio Mane and Mo Salah produce consistently – this means the Barcelona forward would only lead the line when the Brazilian is rested, or when Klopp adjusts the system. There are many clubs where Suarez can go and be the first name on the team sheet, but there are less as ready-made for success right now as Liverpool. The former Ajax striker will turn 34 in January which should shift focus on winning trophies over playing time. This makes Merseyside an attractive proposition – especially for the man with unfinished business after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in 2014. By Adam Brown @AdamMNVi
