Roberto Firmino | The Complete Striker?

“Roberto Firmino is not a 20 goal a season striker” That exact quote was said not so long ago about our number nine and a lot of people agreed with it. He is now pushing close to thirty goals for this season which is outstanding considering he has Mo Salah to compete with but are we actually that surprised considering just how good he is and the perfect start to the most important week of the season with the club showing just how much they value him by offering him a new long-term contract which he happily signed. We signed him from Hoffenheim in August 2015 for £29 million under then manager Brendan Rodgers and it was a great buy on his part. Originally signed as a wide player he didn’t make much of an impact in his first season scoring 10 goals in 31 appearances in the Premier League which for mostly playing in midfield is probably an okay return. He was moved into the central striker position the following season under Jürgen Klopp and he made a slight improvement by scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances but so far this season he has scored 17 goals in 34 appearances with two games still left to play. He has also been remarkable in the Champions league scoring 10 goals in 11 appearances and his involvement in Mo Salah goal against Roma meant he had now assisted Mo eight times this season which is the most common assist-to-scorer partnership in the squad. He also broke another record along with teammate Salah in becoming the first two players in Champions League history to score two and assist two in a semi-final match. His performance against Roma was incredible and probably one of his best in a Liverpool shirt and with a lot of fans giving the praise to Salah (rightly so) you’ve also got to realise that Firmino scored two goals last night and got two assists also. Jürgen Klopp recently described him as ???the engine’ in the team and you can see why. His performances have been a bit overshadowed this season due to the way Mo Salah racking up a total of 43 goals but you can’t deny that he is an incredible player to have on our team. His work rate is second to none and for the full 90 minutes of a game he is constantly running whether it is when we are on the attack or if he is tracking back to help out in defence. His new contract will be a big boost for the squad especially with the second leg of the semi-finals coming up on Wednesday night, it also shows just how much he loves this club and how much he loves playing in this team. He could have easily followed in the footsteps of his Brazilian counter-part Phillipe Coutinho and moved to Barcelona, Real Madrid or PSG or followed in Emre Can footsteps of halting contract negotiations and exploring his options of where he can play next season and move somewhere he is more likely to win trophies because it is an easier league to play in compared to the Premier League but he didn’t want to do that, he wants to stay here and try and win more trophies for us and that is why the fans love him so much. He has also formed an unstoppable strike force with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane with our front three scoring a combined 88 goals this season and racking up a total of 27 goals and 15 assists in all competitions himself this season, surely that guarantees his spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad this summer.
