Reports have emerged recently suggesting that Chelsea’s Mason Mount could well be on Liverpool’s radar. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold have apparently been trying to convince the 22-year-old of the quality of Liverpool’s management and training facilities.

Mount signed his current Chelsea contract before he had made an appearance for England, back when he was seen as a promising youngster, rather than first team regular for the European champions. Could he be persuaded to take a permanent trip up north and turn out for The Reds?

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Goal’s Neil Jones if there was any truth to the rumour that Mount could be interested in a move to Anfield in the future.

Neil said:

“There are some transfers that shock you and some transfers you go, ‘I really didn’t see that one coming!’. If Liverpool got anywhere near Mason Mount, I would be unbelievably surprised. He is one of their stars of the future, stars of the present, he’s an academy product. You can tell what it means to Chelsea and Chelsea fans to have brought him through. They are going to want to move heaven and Earth to keep these kind of players. I can’t see any situation where they allow Mason Mount to leave any time soon.”

There was some skepticism over Mount’s ability when he broke into the Chelsea team. He was seen as being given an easy ride as he was the ‘star pupil’ of both Frank Lampard and Gareth Southgate. He has gone a long way to dispelling those myths by playing consistently well last season, scoring an excellent goal as Chelsea outclassed Liverpool at Anfield earlier in this calendar year.

He would be a superb addition to the Liverpool squad, at a younger age profile than the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago. It is extremely unlikely Chelsea will want to sell him, never mind to a direct title rival.

dd on the ‘English’ premium and that would mean he would only be available for a sky-high fee. He would certainly fit in very well at Liverpool, but they would probably be best looking for the best players that clubs in Europe have to offer, as they did when they signed Fabinho.
