Article by Jack Gill  Liverpool’s Under 18’s fell to their first defeat of the season yesterday as they were beaten by Manchester City at the Etihad Campus. The Young Reds started brightly and were dominant in the first 30 minutes, later rueing their missed chances as City were class and clinical in the second half. Liverpool could’ve been 2 or 3 ahead already when they eventually got the first goal of the game. Jake Cain continued his brilliant form from August as he produced a fine finish from outside the area. The 18 year old now has 3 goals and 4 assists in 5 appearances this season. After taking the lead Liverpool allowed City back into the game with a few defensive errors and the young Reds created their own problems defensively throughout the entire 90 minutes. Thirteen minutes after going ahead, Liverpool conceded. Mistakes from debutant Ojrzynski and Walls allowed James McAttee to pick up the ball deep in the Liverpool half and finish past the LFC goalkeeper. On the stroke of half-time, Liverpool once again took a deserved lead. Prior to the young Reds’ second, they saw two good efforts from their first corner of the game cleared off the line. Billy Koumetio is a threat in the air and caused Man City all kinds of problems aerially throughout the game and his header went straight to Niall Brookwell who headed LFC ahead once again. Barry Lewtas would’ve been happy with his side’s dominance at the break but their was a feeling from many in the stadium that the Young Reds May regret missing so many chances in the opening twenty minutes.

The second half started and the Citizens were a lot better than the first half and made the Reds pay for their sloppiness at the back. Liam Delap, son of former Premier League player Rory was phenomenal for the home side, causing Liverpool lots of problems defensively. Delap struck the post twice before eventually getting his goal to make the score level once again not long after the restart. On the hour mark, City took the lead, once again through brilliance from Liam Delap who out muscled Koumetio and delicately lobbed Ojrzynski to put City ahead for the first time in the game. Liverpool were made to regret their first half misses as City strengthened their lead with 20 minutes to go. Captain D’Margio Wright-Phillips finishing past Ojrzynski to put the home side 4-2 ahead. City continued to grow in confidence as the half went on and their half-time substitute, Liam Byrone-Gittens definitely made an impact from the bench. It was Byrone-Gittens who got City’s fifth, dancing past Ojrzynski as he rounded the Liverpool goalkeeper and finished into the back of the empty net. It was most definitely a game of two halves and a difficult result to take for Lewtas as Liverpool’s youngsters had been fantastic and rampant before the international break. Lewtas and his young Reds will look to bounce back from the defeat when they travel to Naples on Tuesday to face Napoli in the UEFA Youth Champions League. Up the Reds! Jack Gill
