Christmas is over and New Year’s Day approaches. For some, that will mean ditching the biscuits and cutting out the booze, but football fans across the world will be keeping an eye on the latest transfer updates!

There are several players being linked with a move to Liverpool when the transfer window opens. We caught up with Goal’s Neil Jones and asked him about the likelihood of the Reds getting involved in any January business.

One player linked with such a move is West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen. The English attacker has put in some good performances under David Moyes and has been one of the stand outs in a team that have already beaten two of the top three teams in the league this season.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight Show, we asked Neil the likelihood of Bowen making the move to Merseyside this winter.

Neil said:

“Looking at buying players in the Premier League, [they are] already bordering on overpriced. You’re always talking about ‘overpriced’ in the Premier League, especially a young English player, and to do it in January from a team that isn’t in dire straits, West Ham, Bowen is one of their main men. I don’t know the ins and outs of their financial situation, but it doesn’t feel like West Ham are in a particularly bad position in terms of money. It would feel like it would be hard to sign someone like him. I wouldn’t be amazed if either of those two [Bowen or Raphinha] joined in the summer but I would be amazed if they joined in January.”

Redmen Reacts

Bowen has impressed for West Ham and knows his role under David Moyes. Neil is right to point out the issue of the premium on English players, as Premier League clubs look to comply with the homegrown player regulations. Bowen would cost an awful lot of money from a West Ham that is in relatively rude health at the moment. Bowen’s work rate and commitment cannot be questioned, but his top flight goal record of around one goal every six games would need to be improved significantly to hold down a regular place in the side. Do not expect to see Bowen making a January move, but the links between him and LFC are strong enough that a summer move is not out of the question.
